Man who disciplined son with belt gets probation

A Lansford man who previously admitted he disciplined his son with a belt was placed on probation on Thursday in Carbon County court.

Quint Leroy Dortch II, 30, of Lansford, who previously pleaded guilty to one count of simple assault, was placed on probation for 18 months by Judge Joseph J. Matika.

Lansford police charged Dortch following an incident on Nov. 28, 2016. Police received information that a then 4-year-old boy had bruises to his lower back and right hip and the injuries were consistent with being struck by a belt.

Police questioned Dortch, who admitted striking his son "on the butt."

Dortch told Matika he realized what he did was wrong. He said he is receiving counseling and completed a parenting course. He said he had a hard upbringing and he didn't want his children to have the same.

Matika told him, "Your upbringing may have had something to do with what happened that day." But he added, "Physical discipline is not legal and is inappropriate."

Matika also ordered Dortch to get a mental health evaluation, render 75 hours of community service, attend and successfully complete anger management courses, pay court costs of about $1,000 and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation.
