A Carbon County man was sentenced to a county prison term on Monday after pleading guilty to a charge of failing to register as a sexual offender, per Megan’s Law.
Charles Shafer, 32, of Jim Thorpe, appeared before Judge Steven R. Serfass to plead to a charge of fail to verify address/be photographed, as required for a sexual offender, a felony 3.
Shafer was determined to be a sexual offender for an offense in Montana. When he moved to Pennsylvania in September 2019, he failed to register with the state police as a sexual offender. He was required to do so within three days of moving to the state. He had to give troopers his address and be photographed.
Shafer claimed his failure to register was partly due to his drug addiction problem. He said he is attempting to get into an inpatient program. He is currently an inmate in the county prison on the charge.
Serfass sentenced him to serve nine to one day less 24 months in prison with credit for 175 days already served. He was also ordered to supply a DNA sample, get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, pay court costs of about $1,000, pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole and when paroled render 100 hours of community service.
