Powerful winds topple large trees in Tamaqua

Despite only lasting a few minutes, Tuesday night's quick thunderstorm and high winds still managed to cause minor havoc throughout the area.

Firefighters, police and borough workers were called to numerous reports of trees and large branches down and other wind-related concerns. There were two fallen trees on Schuylkill Avenue in Tamaqua; one of which broke the rear window of a parked vehicle.Responders had the task of removing a large 60-foot-tall tree that had fallen near the intersection of Elizabeth Street and Mountain Avenue. It also took down a small power line, just barely missing a garage. In addition, garbage that was set out for trash pickup was also strewn about as high winds scattered debris.

Tamaqua borough worker Jack Steele works with the Tamaqua Police, American Hose and East End fire companies to remove a tree that had fallen into the back yard of 500 Arlington St. in Tamaqua.
