Lehighton extends deadline to remove Christmas trees in the Park

Due to the extreme cold, the Lehighton Parks & Recreation Board has extended the deadline to remove Christmas trees in the Park decorations until Wednesday.

The board reminds those who decorated trees that it is their responsibility to remove all decorations and lights. Those who choose not to do so will not be permitted to adopt a tree next year.

A slight change to the disposal of the trees has also been made, as the original plan for this year, as well as last year, was to donate the trees to the Carbon County Environmental Education Center to be used for natural habitats, the board said.

However, the board said there is a need for fresh mulch in the borough to be utilized for the Shade Tree Commission and the 150 Trees for 150 Years, so they have decided to mulch the trees for recycling in the borough.

The board thanks everyone who adopted trees, who attended the borough’s tree lighting ceremony, who strolled the parks to look at the trees, or who marveled at photos online.

“It is certainly a wonderful tradition for Lehighton, and one that we hope to continue for years to come,” the board said.

For those already thinking about next year, anyone who adopted a tree this year will receive a call from the board in the beginning of October to give them first opportunity to adopt again.

By mid-October, applications will be available to the public for additional adoptions on a first-come, first-served basis.
