Nesquehoning council

Nesquehoning Borough Council acted on or discussed the following items during its monthly meeting on Wednesday.

• Accepted the resignation of Shawn Quigley from the borough planning commission. A letter of thanks will be sent to Quigley for his service.

• Approved a reverse subdivision for the Kovatch Enterprises that combines multiple parcels into one parcel; and a subdivision on West Mill Street between the borough and Elizabeth Lisella.

• Approved a notice from the Carbon County Tax Claim Bureau to allow the sale of 129 E. Mill St. through the repository sale.

• Broad Mountain Power asked for an exemption of its proposed transmission line in the borough from zoning. It was noted the company has not sent any written agreement with PPL Electric to take ownership of the transmission line to the borough as of the meeting. Solicitor Robert Yurchak said if PPL was constructing the transmission line, it would be exempt from borough zoning requirements. The issue remains outstanding at this time. No formal action was taken.

• Approved advertising for a full-time officer pending the solicitor’s review of a question that council posed if a current part-time officer who took the full-time test recently for another borough can use those results with applying for the full-time position in Nesquehoning.

• Added officer Joseph David back into the part-time officer list. David was a part-time officer in the borough in the past and was never taken off the part-time roster so he could be scheduled again as long as qualifications are met.

• Approved a grant narrative for an LSA grant application for police items, including the replacement of a cruiser, security cameras for the vehicles, license plate readers and upgrades to the car cameras. No figure on how much the borough is applying for has been finalized yet.

• The next Nesquehoning Neighborhood Watch meeting will take place at 7 p.m. on Aug. 5 in the borough hall. All are welcome.

• Mayor Sam Kitchko reminded residents that the police are still looking for residents who have outside security cameras who would be willing to share footage in the event of an incident near their home. The police are compiling a list of names and addresses for their use in investigations. The list would only be available to police. If you are interested in being included on that list, call the police department at 570-669-9111.

• For the month of June, the police collected $5,462.54, issued 35 citations, had 432 incidents reported and drove 4,818 miles while on patrol.

• Council is continuing to review bids for the borough’s sanitation contract, which expires at the end of September. The borough is looking at both garbage and recycling services as part of the overall contract. A decision on the contract is expected at council’s August meeting.

• The next Recreation Commission meeting will be at 7 p.m. on Aug. 5 at the Nesquehoning Recreation Center.
