If you are looking to add a little spice to your life, or perhaps you just want to break those winter blues, head out to Galen Glen on Saturday for the fifth annual Chili Cook Off on Saturday.

Six local cooks will compete for the honor of top chili recipe, which will be determined by the audience. For an $8 fee, each guest over 21 years old will get a 1- ounce sample of each chili, along with a glass of Galen Glen’s Chambourcin or Cellar Red varieties. The West Penn Fire Company will receive $4 from each ticket sold.

This year’s competition is tough, with two professional chefs, a past runner-up, and a representative from the West Penn Fire Company, who have dominated the show in the recent past.

“For the past two years, it’s been someone from the firehouse,” Galen Glen tasting room manager Kathy Matson said. “As soon as they started competing, they started winning.”

Each contestant will be tasked with crafting a dish featuring either the Chambourcin or Cellar Red, both of which make “a nice addition to a chili,” according to Matson. The victor will have their chili served to Galen Glen guests in October, when the Chambourcin season takes off.

The event should make for a fun and fiery day, and guests can be happy that it all benefits a great cause.

“It just seems like a natural fit – fire companies and chili,” Matson said. “Some of us have family members who are firefighters, and we know a little about what they have to deal with when it comes to funding, so we want to help.”
