Rig crashes along I-80 in Carbon

A tractor-trailer crashed along Interstate 80 in Kidder Township, Carbon County, at 3:15 a.m. Tuesday.

State police at Fern Ridge said Neal A. Carpenter, 55, of Webster, Massachusetts, was driving a 2010 Freightliner with trailer westbound when the rig left the road and crashed through the guardrail. The truck rolled onto its driver's side and slid along the guardrail for about 75 yards, destroying the guardrail, before coming to rest with its cab blocking the left passing lane.Carpenter told troopers he fell asleep at the wheel and awoke but it was too late to avoid a collision. He was not injured.Troopers said he faces traffic charges.Assisting troopers at the scene were volunteers from the Lake Harmony and Albrightsville fire companies and Lake Harmony ambulance, along with Kidder Township police and PennDOT personnel. The state Department of Agriculture was also on scene as the trailer was filled with edibles from Newbury, Massachusetts, en route to Bolingbrook, Illinois.
