Man charged in vehicle theft after police use tracking

A Tamaqua man has been charged in connection with the theft of a motor vehicle on Dec. 24.

McAdoo Police were dispatched to Fegley's Mini Mart on Christmas Eve where they met a man who reported his 2010 Chevrolet Traverse had been stolen. The victim admitted the keys had been left in a cupholder in the truck.The GM product was equipped with a functioning OnStar device, allowing police to track the vehicle. At the time of the trace, the SUV was traveling south on Interstate 81. The driver took an exit and drove on several back roads, going toward Tamaqua. As officers monitored the vehicle's progress, police units from Rush Township and Tamaqua set up positions in an attempt to stop the stolen car.As the vehicle traveled Taggertsville Road, the driver swerved around a Rush Township cruiser, then almost struck Tamaqua's Unit 178. Officers were able to identify the driver as Anthony Napolitano, 30, of 411 E. Broad St., Tamaqua.The chase came to an end when Napolitano stopped the SUV in front of 516 Railroad St. in Tamaqua and fled the scene.Napolitano will be charged with theft of a motor vehicle and fleeing/eluding law enforcement.
