The new senator in Harrisburg who will represent Carbon County is John Yudichak.

Yudichak, a Nanticoke resident, won the 14th Senatorial District seat in Tuesday's General Election, defeating Republican Stephen Urban and LIbertarian Party candidate Betsy Summers.The 14th District includes 35 municipalities in Luzerne County, Pocono and Tobyhanna townships in Monroe County and 15 of the 23 municipalities in Carbon County, including Banks, Kidder, Lausanne, Lehigh, Mahoning and Packer townships and Beaver Meadows, East Side, Jim Thorpe, Lansford, Lehighton, Nesquehoning, Summit Hill, Weatherly and Weissport boroughs.In yesterday's balloting, Yudichak was the lone Democrat to win in Carbon County, scoring a 5,179 to 4,610 win over Urban, a Luzerne County commissioner. Summers received 533 voters in Carbon.Overall, he won by over 11,000 votes. A current representative in the Pennsylvania House, Yudichak tallied 37,047 votes overall, compared to Urban's 25,604 and 3,685 for Summers.In the Luzerne County balloting, the senator-elect collected 30,171 votes. Urban received 18,863 and Summers had 2,926. Urban won in the two Monroe townships by a margin of 2,131 to 1,687. Summers had 226 in Monroe.Yudichak, 40, has served in the House for the past 12 years. In addition, he is active in numerous civic organizations, including The Luzerne Foundation, the advisory board of Penn State Wilkes-Barre, Newport Township Lions Club, Plymouth Township Recreation Association, and Sons of the American Legion, Larksville Post.Rep. Yudichak is the founder of the Yudichak Family Lighthouse Fund of the Luzerne Foundation, a local charitable fund benefiting local public libraries and youth programs. The fund has distributed nearly $100,000 to programs benefiting the residents of Luzerne County. He is a graduate of Greater Nanticoke Area High School, Wyoming Seminary Preparatory School and Pennsylvania State University with a bachelor's degree in English and a master's degree in American studies.He resides in Plymouth Township with his wife, attorney Heather Yudichak, and their daughters, Sarah, Anna and Evelyn.Yudichak will succeed Sen. Ray Musto of Pittston, who is retiring after a 28-year career in the Senate.The new senator joins Sen. David Argall in representing Carbon County. Argall currently holds the 29th Senatorial District position.Yudichak will begin his four-year term in January. The position carries an annual salary of $78,314.
