Lehighton man faces charges after leading police on chase

A Lehighton man faces multiple charges after he led Nesquehoning police on a high-speed chase and had drugs in his wallet.

Erick Ti Whaley, 20, of 123½ Mauch Chunk St., is charged with possession of a controlled substance, careless and reckless driving, speeding, eluding police, passing in a no passing zone following an incident that started in Nesquehoning and ended in Jim Thorpe. At 9:47 a.m. April 24, Nesquehoning officer Timothy Wuttke was conducting speed checks along Route 209 in the borough when he noticed a gray SUV speeding toward Jim Thorpe. He clocked the vehicle traveling at 81.7 mph in a 40 mph zone.Wuttke attempted to stop the vehicle, but during the pursuit, the driver passed another car in a no passing zone around a right-hand turn as oncoming traffic was approaching. He pulled back as a result of the high rate of speed that the SUV was traveling and radioed for help from the Jim Thorpe police. The vehicle, a Chevrolet Equinox, was discovered in traffic just before the Liberties section of Jim Thorpe, but did not stop until it was in the middle of the roadway at the Route 903 intersection. Wuttke then contacted the person by walking up to the vehicle that he had been pursuing and instructed the driver to pull over in the Subway parking lot.Upon conducting the traffic stop, the driver, identified as Whaley, told Wuttke that he was speeding because he had received a "frantic call from his mother who needed him to pick her up due to a fight with her boyfriend," the affidavit states.Whaley admitted twice that he had seen the police vehicle with lights and sirens activated, but "wanted to get to his mom."A search of Whaley's wallet also revealed a packet, which Whaley claimed was "a crushed Viagra pill his friend had given him." The powder later tested positive for oxycodone.
