Carbon County's veterans affairs director has been named to a state advisory council.

During the county commissioners' meeting on Thursday, the board announced that Henry Desrosiers has been appointed by Gov. Edward Rendell to the advisory council for the Gino Merli Veterans' Center.Commissioner William O'Gurek said he was proud of Desrosiers' accomplishment."He's doing a great job," O'Gurek said. "We get reports periodically about benefits to veterans in the county and the number is increasing all the time. That is a tribute to Desrosiers' work. We're glad that Rendell appointed him to the advisory council."Commissioner Wayne Nothstein also commended Desrosiers' work."That is a real accomplishment (to be appointed to the council)," he said. "I support him 100 percent."Desrosiers, who has been the director of veterans affairs since February 2008, said he was happy for the chance to sit on the council."I'm really honored that I was appointed," he said. "This experience is going to give me some insight on what we need to do to assist those veterans in those nursing homes."Desrosiers will now serve on the council until April 5, 2013.The Gino Merli Veterans' Center is located in downtown Scranton. It is a 200-bed facility that treats veterans in need of nursing home care.In a related matter, O'Gurek pointed out that correspondence was received from Paul Kattner, zoning/code enforcement officer for Beaver Meadows, commending two county employees for their excellent representation of the county.In the letter, Kattner praises Jerry Scarpati of the county's IT department; and Larry Stawiarski, director of the GIS/Mapping department; as well as all of the employees in the Carbon County Courthouse for their help with obtaining information that is necessary for Kattner's job.
