Stawick powers Marian
When a good hitter breaks out of a slump it's usually in a big manner.
Weatherly seemed to be in the midst of a rally as Marian held on to an 8-5 lead after four innings of play.Luke Stawick answered the call all day whenever Marian needed some offense. Stawick hit a three-run bomb in a huge nine-run fifth inning for the Colts as they went on to defeat Weatherly, 17-6."I've been in a slump lately," admitted Stawick. "It's honestly all on my teammates, they've been helping me through it." The senior Colt also had a solo shot in the first inning as he totaled seven RBIs in the contest.Pete Baddick of Marian had a great day at the dish as well. Baddick had a solo home run of his own in the game, as well as four RBIs."I can't say enough about how our offense is performing," said Marian head coach Jeff Nietz. "Coming into tonight we had 41 hits in three games. Eleven more tonight makes 52 in four games. I'll take that any day."Despite the loss, Weatherly head coach Brian Kaminski saw some encouraging things from his squad."Our pitchers threw strikes and our defense played solid. I think those are some positives we can take away from today."Kaminski also liked what he saw out of his young starting pitcher Luke Figas. The Weatherly coach said, "Luke was solid once he got out of the first inning. I think once he gets a few more innings under his belt he's going to be able to trust some of his pitches. He's only a sophomore and I think he can only get better."Marian starting pitcher Logan Mehalshick pitched in and out of trouble all day. He only threw three innings, but had lively "stuff" as he struck out six batters while on the mound.Nietz said, "Logan found himself today. He struggled a little bit in his first outing, but even when he did so today he picked himself up and got out of it. He kept his composure and we were pleased with his performance on the mound."Marian seems to be a solid offensive force in the Schulykill League. Kaminski wants his club to understand they can play with the best of the league, as they did for much of the contest."We were patient at the plate but we weren't driving balls in play like we need to. I want them to be more aggressive and know that they can play with the better teams in the league. This a young group but I think if they trust themselves and trust their baseball abilities, they'll be able to do well."As for Marian, Nietz emphasized to his squad that they can't let teams hang around late in games."Weatherly is a proud program and their kids are going to scrap. You can't ever get too comfortable. I want us to respect our opponents and always keep our heads in the game."The Marian coach gave a ton of credit to the rest of his assistant coaches involved with the program."A lot of people say some things as to why I have such a big coaching staff, but they are a big reason why a ton of positive things are happening. We have individual coaches for every position and the work that these kids are putting into getting better is second to none."Marian 512 09 - 17 11 2Weatherly 020 31 - 6 4 2Mehalshick, Schmidt (3) and Nietz; Figas, Hoffman (5) and Maiello.
