Carbon County will continued to be served with public transportation for another five years.
On Thursday, the commissioners voted to approve an agreement with the Lehigh and Northampton Transportation Authority to operate and manage the county's public transportation system, Carbon County Community Transit.The county will pay LANta $120,000 for years one through three and $125,000 for years four and five.LANta has managed Carbon's transit system for over two decades, officials said.Owen P. O'Neil, executive director of LANta, explained that the agreement provides funding for the handling of finance work, required reporting to the state, website maintenance, compliance monitoring, day-to-day operations, completing applications and distributing communications.CCCT serves approximately 60,000 riders annually through its paratransit operations and also operates the Lynx, a fixed bus route system.CCCT offers van services from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Customer must call in advance to reserve a trip. Gerhard reported that signs appearing along Carbon County roadways will begin disappearing soon.The "We do metal roofs" signs were not approved and he has been in contact with a number of municipalities and the state with regards to them.Some of the signs have been taken down that are within the state's rights of way.Some municipalities have said that they will also remove the signs along roadways, Gerhard said, adding that the county has been trying to contact the company about the signs, but have not had a nice response from them.
