The Tamaqua Senior Citizens met April 27 with 56 members in attendance. President Melody Weicker conducted the business session and provided the inspirational reading "Take Time to Give Thanks."Paul Randig and Joyce Krell were added to the sick list. Gloria Gerhart was welcomed back to the club. Joan Deitrich reported on her efforts to find a permanent meeting location for the group.Nathan Gerace, a candidate for Tamaqua mayor, was the guest speaker. He spoke of his plans to make Tamaqua a safer place to live.The meeting included a celebration of March and April birthdays, honoring Pat Fredericks, Madelene Heffelfinger, Joan Deitrich, Gladys Arner, Antoinette Trivano and Sylvia Houseman.Upcoming events include: May 11, basket raffle; May 15, trip to Mohegan Sun Casino.The group is open to anyone 55 or older.Meetings are held at 1 p.m. Thursdays at the Tamaqua YMCA, 1201 E. Broad St.Hear betterSt. Luke's Miners Campus, 360 W. Ruddle St., Coaldale, is sponsoring a series of continuing education sessions on a variety of health topics. The sessions will be held from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. the third Friday of every month.This month's session will be held on May 19. The topic will be "better hearing and speech, when a whisper becomes a roar." It is based on LSVT Loud, a global treatment program designed to improve respiratory, laryngeal and articulatory function to maximize speech intelligibility through specialized exercises.All sessions will be held in the first floor community room. Light refreshments will be served.Seating is limited. To reserve a seat, call 570-645-8157.Comic book dayFree Comic Book Day will be held at the Tamaqua Public Library on Saturday. The celebration will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.The day will be filled with multiple, family friendly events, such as crafts, superhero movies and the opportunity to create personal comic strips.Each family will be eligible to receive a free comic book, taken from a varied selection, while supplies last.The library is located at 30 S. Railroad St., Tamaqua.Soup socialThe next monthly community soup social at Trinity United Church of Christ will be held on Saturday. The social will be held from 4-6 p.m. in the social hall.The meal is free to the public and everyone is welcome to enjoy the soup, desserts, refreshments and time with friends.For more information or to volunteer, stop by the church at 22 Lafayette St. or call 570-668-4139.Bethany ECThe Rev. Kevin Roberts will officiate at the 8 and 10:30 a.m. worship services this Sunday in Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church.
