Bombers' Shupp gets two golds

The Northwestern and Palmerton track teams both have had very successful seasons in 2014.

So, it's no surprise that their athletes performed well on Tuesday at day one of the Colonial League Track and Field Championships. The most impressive performance on the day came from Palmerton's Austin Shupp.Shupp put together two gold medal performances on the day, winning the triple jump and 300IH. Shupp came in seeded first in the 300IH and did not disappoint, running a time of 38.01, which was just off the CL Championships record of a 37.96.Shupp's other first place finish however, was a CL Championships record. The Blue Bomber competed in the triple jump for just the second time this season, recording a record breaking jump of 47-2 1/2."I competed in the triple jump in early April here at the Zephyr Invite and then today was just my second time," said Shupp. "It was my job to get my team points today and that's what I was able to do. As far as my run in the 300 goes, I was real happy with it. That's the kind of run I wanted to have going into districts. If I didn't stumble a little there at the end I think I could've had the record."The Northwestern track team had a record setting bunch of its own on the afternoon. The Foursome of Sara Segan, Sabrina Mertz, Rachele Cerrone, and Haley Yost not only took home the gold in the 3200 relay, but they also set a new Colonial League Championships record with a time of 9:36.46.Yost, who also finished second in the 3200 meter run, had this to say about her team's record breaking effort."I think we're all really excited about our time today, because our times haven't been as good as last year," said Yost. "Carly Pierce, who usually competes in that event for us really hasn't been able to because of some injuries, so Sara Segan has stepped in and has done a great job. It took us a little while to get back to where we were, but it's very good to know we can run that type of time heading into districts."Northwestern's Trista Cunningham came through with her best throw of the season in the disucs, winning the event with a distance of 115-7. Performing well at the CL Championships was important for Cunningham, meaning for her, Tuesday was mission accomplished."I couldn't be more happy winning gold today," said Cunningham. "I wanted to come into this event and medal, being that it's my second year throwing the discus, so winning the gold to me is a great accomplishment. The discus is by far my favorite event too, so it was extra special for me to win it."The Lady Tigers Alexis Gawelko felt a little more pressure coming into this year's CL Championships, being seeded first in the 300IH. However, Gawelko put her own nervous reservations to rest, taking home gold in the event with a time of 48:08."I did feel a lot of pressure this year coming in seeded first, having such a good season, but I ran my best and was able to win," said Gawelko. "This is definitely a confidence builder for me. I actually didn't feel that great about my run coming around the first turn, but I finished strong in that last stretch."Lastly, for Northwestern, Alex Partington took silver in the discus with a throw of 142-6.The Blue Bombers' Darris Rodrigues was able to get to the Colonial League medal stand for the first time in his career, finishing first in the pole vault. Rodrigues took home gold with a vault of 12-9.Palmerton's Spencer Hay came into the day seeded first in the high jump and left the event in the same fashion, winning the gold. Hay came through with a jump of 6-1. Hay was happy with the way he performed and was also adamant about wanting to jump well heading into districts."Coming into today I felt really good," said Hay. "When you're competing against competition in a league meet like this it's easy to be pushed to perform your best."You know everyone is going to bring their best effort to the table, so you need to bring your "A" game. Luckily, I was able to do that today."Going into day two, Palmerton leads the boys team rankings with 59.5 points. Northwestern is fifth with 28.5 points, while Northern Lehigh is 10th with six points. In the girls competition, Northwestern leads all Colonial League squads with 66 points. Palmerton and Northern Lehigh are currently tied for 1tth place with four points each.
