Deubler pitches Bears to another title

SWIFTWATER Tracy Deubler admitted she was nervous all week.

As it turned out, it was the Stroudburg batters that should have been feeling the pressure.Pleasant Valley's senior pitcher turned in an outstanding effort Thursday afternoon, tossing a two-hit shutout and striking out 12, to lead the Bears to a 2-0 victory and their fourth straight Mountain Valley Conference championship.Deubler, who rotates every other game in the circle with teammate Kiersten Griesback, figured that she's be getting the nod in the title game if her team made it that far.She did, and she didn't disappoint."I figured it was going to be every other game like it's been all season," said Deubler, whose only loss this year was to the Mounties. "So I kind of knew ... that I would get the ball in the finals."It was really nerve-wracking all week knowing that I was going to get it. I just tried to stay confident ... I tried to stay calm but it's always nervous pitching in the MVC finals game."While her insides might have been churning a bit, on the outside she seemed solid and steady. The right-hander didn't allow a runner past second base and threw a first-pitch strike to 21 of the 25 hitters she faced."I think I did a really good job with the first-pitch strikes," said Deubler. "I definitely was trying to throw a lot of screwballs too because I know they have trouble hitting those. They have some really good hitters but I know that I have a really solid defense behind me so I was confident with throwing stikes.""In the beginning of the year she struggled (with first-pitch strikes) and that's when we told both of our pitchers you have to get ahead in the count," said Pleasant Valley head coach Steve Caffrey. "After that we can do different things with the batter. They both worked hard at it and things worked out for them. Today was just a great-pitched game."Stroudsburg's Erica Molinaro also turned in a well-pitched contest, but a first-inning error left her team playing from behind the rest of the way.PV's leadoff hitter Jordan Meckes opened the bottom of the first inning with a hard liner right at the Mounties center fielder. The ball, however, went off her glove and Meckes rolled into second base. After Griesback bunted her over to the third, Meckes raced in on Brittany Bonser's grounder to short."When we got our one-run lead, I felt a little calmer," said Deubler. "I figured the game would be a battle of the pitchers."While Deubler, who retired 17 of 18 batters during one stretch, was in command, Molinaro was forced to wriggle her way out of a few jams. The Bears left 10 runners on base during the second through fifth innings, unable to expand on their lead."It was satisfying playing with a lead, but I would have liked to been up a little more," said Caffrey. "One of the things we try to stress is you don't always have to come up with a hit, you just have to put the ball in play and that can make it a good at-bat. That's what we were able to do today in the two innings we scored."Pleasant Valley was finally able to give Deubler a little bit of insuance in the home sixth without benefit of a hit. After two walks to open the frame, Griesback laid down another sacrifice bunt. Bonser followed with a sacrifice fly to center to plate Katie Lenhart and up the margin to 2-0."That was huge," said Deubler. "It was really big to get that second run in."The Mounties did put two runners on base in the seventh, but Deubler got a grounder to third to end the threat."Tracy threw a good game, " said Stroudsburg mentor Maynard Frantz. "She moved the ball in and out and did all the right things today. We swung at too many high pitches and we left too many good pitches go."Our bats were just dead today and unfortunately that's the way it goes sometimes. But you have to give the pitcher a lot of credit for what she did and the game she threw against us."The Bears (18-4) will now get ready for the District 11 playoffs, where they more than likely will have to face some Lehigh Valley Conference powers."It's great winning the MVC," said Caffrey. "Stroudsburg and us have battled the past few years. It's become a big rivalry. But you don't get respect up here until you beat the teams down there. If we can make it far in districts that'll be icing on the cake for us."Stroudsburg 000 000 0 - 0 2 2Pleasant Vy. 100 001 x - 2 4 0Molinaro and Pizzo; Deubler and Caffrey. W - Deubler. L - Molinaro.
