Eagle Scout candidate makes getting around the West End Fair easier

Scott E. Mackes of Saylorsburg debuted his Eagle Scout project at the West End Fair.

Mackes built three map-holders that are currently displaying maps to assist fairgoers to find where they would like to go during the West End Fair, which runs through Saturday.

The project, according to Mackes’ father, John, includes two posts, set 3 feet into the ground, supporting the map-holders, which are made of Plexiglas set into routed lumber. There are three boards, one located at each entrance to the fair.

“Scott wanted to make something that would serve the community for a long time to come,” said his father. “This is something he knows that someday he can show his own kids.”

John Mackes said he helped his son with the project, but that it was Scott who did the majority of the work.

“I would show him once and then he would do it,” he said. “Even digging the post holes by hand.”

Mackes raised $675.87 selling peanuts at Sunny’s Market in Jonas for the project. The total cost was $674.84.

Mackes was asked to take on the project by Robert Coleman, fair executive director.

Mackes is 16 years old and the son of John and Sue Mackes of Saylorsburg. He is a member of Troop 102 and he has been in Scouts since the age of 6 when his dad was his first Cub scoutmaster.

Scott will be entering the 10th grade, splitting his time between Pleasant Valley High School and Monroe Career & Technical Institute, where he is enrolled in the carpentry program.

Mackes has submitted his project for final approval and is looking forward to planning his Eagle Honor Court in the future.
