U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright has announced that Lehighton Area High School student Chris Whiteman has been accepted to the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland. Cartwright nominated Whiteman to attend the academy where he will begin his service career.
Whiteman is a Lehighton Area High School graduate and the son of Glenn R. Whiteman II and Nidia E. Whiteman. While attending Lehighton Area High School, Whiteman was a member of the National Honor Society, the Top 10% Club, and FBLA, and captain of the football and wrestling teams. Whiteman also received the 2018 President’s Volunteer Service Award for completing over 250 hours of community service in one year and attended the 2018 Naval Summer Seminar.
“Each year, I have the distinct honor of nominating students from our Congressional District to our nation’s military academies,” Cartwright said. “To be nominated, students must not only excel academically, but also exhibit a passion for service and leadership. Chris is a well-rounded, bright young man and a role model for his peers; I am so proud of his hard work, perseverance, and acceptance into the Naval Academy.”
In order to attend one of the military academies, students must receive a nomination from their member of Congress.
