Agosti leads Marian rout of Shenandoah

It's that time in the football season where each game proves important. Teams need to get out to a quick start and attempt to dictate momentum early on.

Marian utilized big-play performances from Nico Agosti to leap to a 20-0 lead that set the tone for the remainder of the contest, as they eventually cruised to the 41-0 mercy rule win over Shenandoah Valley. With the win, the Colts are guaranteed a winning record this season and solidified their position in the District 11 Class A postseason, as they improve to 6-3 on the year."It was very important to get the win because it guarantees a winning season," Marian head coach Stan Dakosty said. "We wanted to execute, we didn't want to win sloppy. I challenged the kids at halftime because I thought we were a little sloppy on the offensive line. We came out and responded, got two quick scores and put the game away."In terms of the important quick start for the Colts, Dakosty said, "That's a goal for us to get a quick start and I thought we played a well-rounded game tonight."After a Shenandoah punt, Marian went to work immediately, as it took three plays to get on the board as Ethan Kuczynski connected with Agosti for a 35-yard score. Another punt by the Blue Devils yielded another Marian score, as they went 77 yards in nine plays for the 13-0 lead. Agosti scored on a reverse around the right side of the defense and went one-on-one with a defender to blitz to pay dirt. The senior receiver wasn't finished yet, as on his team's ensuing drive, he scored again on his most impressive possession of the night after getting the ball and maneuvering through the line, he seemed to be potentially caught, before spinning free and racing 74 yards for a 20-0 lead with 10:57 left in the third."It was important to get a quick start, we knew we had to just get in a rhythm and execute, and then play tough defense," Agosti said. "Coach is always talking about how we need to 'step up,' we need to win those one-on-one battles and tonight we did."The score remained locked in through halftime, before a locker room speech re-lit the fire in the Colts' stables to get back to work in the second half. The response was immediate, as Nick Sully rumbled 55 yards for a score on the first possession, and the Devils' kickoff was fumbled and recovered by the Colts, who turned the turnover into a score when Kuczynski found Angelo Maskornick for a 33-yard scoring reception to produce a 34-0 swell that all but ended the Devils' chances of a win.Marian then added another score when Josiah Fedorshak pounced in from the five for the commencement of the Mercy Rule.In the game, Agosti finished with 126 yards of offense, running three times for 84 yards and hauling in two catches for 42 yards, to go with his three scores. Sully also had a nice game, rushing 11 times for 88 yards and scoring once. With Tamaqua awaiting the Colts next week, Agosti is hoping for another quick start next week. "We have to play with the same intensity that we did tonight. We're going to have to execute and practice hard all week, and focus on our gameplan."
