Kosciolek stars in Raider win
A less confident player would have stopped shooting.
A less talented player would have stopped scoring. But Brett Kosciolek is both confident and talented and because he is, Tamaqua is still undefeated. In an early season showdown between Schuylkill League unbeatens that exceeded even the highest expectations, Kosciolek's monster game helped the Raiders rally for a 79-74 overtime victory over Lehighton.Kosciolek finished with 35 points, including eight points in both the fourth quarter and overtime when he took over the game. He also pulled down 17 rebounds.Kosciolek's huge night came despite a cold start that saw him go 1-for-9 from the floor as Lehighton jumped out to an early double digit lead."For the most part, I felt like I was taking some pretty good shots, but I was just a little off," said Kosciolek about his start. "Lehighton was also playing well defensively early in the game."I just tried to stay confident and find my rhythm. After I hit one or two shots, I got on a pretty good roll. As a scorer, you have to always believe that next shot is going in."For Kosciolek, most of his remaining shots did just that. The 6-7 senior went 13-for-18 from the field after his slow start."Our game plan was to take Kosciolek away from their offense … obviously we didn't do a very good job of that," said Lehighton coach Rich Oertner. "He hit some big shots. He is a really nice player and Tamaqua is a very good team. I thought it was a great game."We did some things I liked, but just not enough of them. It was a tough game to lose."Lehighton led by ten points on two different occasions in the second quarter, but Kosciolek scored 15 in the period to help Tamaqua pull to within 37-34 at half.Once again, the Indians stretched out their lead in third quarter as Tyler Crum buried a pair of three-pointers. But with Tamaqua trailing by nine points, Bo Rottet drilled a trio of three-pointers in the final 1:44 of the period to tighten things up again."Our kids played tremendous," said Tamaqua coach Caz Kosciolek. "This was an outstanding basketball game."We got contributions up and down the lineup. Bo hit those big threes in the third quarter to get us close, Nate MacDonald was fierce under the basket, and Brett was huge with both his scoring and rebounding, especially in the late stages of the game."Kosciolek scored the first six points of the final quarter to give Tamaqua a 60-58 lead - it's first since it was 2-0.The Raiders were up four with less than a half a minute to play but a Nick Chambers layup and a pair of Jordan Knappenberger free throws following a Raider turnover tied the game with :20 left and forced overtime.Lehighton took a quick 73-68 lead at the start of OT, but Kosciolek had eight points as Tamaqua outscored the Indians 11-2 the rest of the way to pull it out.In addition to Kosciolek's big game, McDonald had 18 points and Rottet had 15 for the Raiders (8-0, 3-0).For Lehighton (5-1, 2-1), Knappenberger had 21 points, Chambers scored 17, Crum had 14 and Tanner Zwetolitz added 10."We had lots of chances to win this game," said Oertner. "In close games like this the little things make a big difference and we didn't do enough little things right, especially down the stretch."That wasn't a problem for Kosciolek, however, who proved that it's not how you start, it's how you finish."In those types of situations, I want the ball in my hands," said Kosciolek about his fourth quarter and overtime contributions. "I feel like I can make something happen."Whether its getting myself free for a shot or finding one of my teammates, I'm confident I can make a play to help us win."LEHIGHTONRuzicka 2-0-1-4, Crum 5-0-0-14, Zwetolitz 4-0-0-10, Williams 3-1-3-8, Chambers 6-4-6-17, Knappenberger 6-6-8-21.
