Indians capture championship
Danny Williams knew his team had a chance to be successful during Saturday's Indian Duals.
After the Tribe went 4-1 in last year's event, the Lehighton coach thought the potential matchups in the eight-team tournament offered his squad the chance to gain a measure of redemption this time around. The Indians made the most of the opportunity, going a perfect 5-0 to claim the title.Lehighton defeated Pius X 66-12, Southern Lehigh 54-15 and East Stroudsburg North 46-27 to win Pool A.The Indians dispatched Palmerton 42-27 in the semifinals before conquering last year's champion, Pine Grove, 50-27 for the title."It was a tournament where we knew we had some teams that we should beat, or at least be competitive against them," Williams said. "We knew that if we did the right things, they were matches that we should win and we did."After suffering their only defeat (42-24) to the Cardinals during last year's tournament, Williams noted just how much of a difference the 12 months had made for the two sides."I think last year, we had a lot of young guys that maybe didn't have the experience they did and that hurt us," the coach said of facing the more seasoned Pine Grove. "But now, they're kind of in the same position we were (last season) and we were able to take advantage of that."The highlights for the Indians were many, as Nate Kemmerer, Antonio Lorenzo, Zachary Kemmerer, Tegan Durishin and Wyatt Clements all went 5-0. Tyler Cann, Connor Frey and Grant Wetzel finished the day 4-1."Those guys were all huge today," said Williams. "Those are guys that we really lean on, and they do a great job of stepping up and coming through for us when we need them."While Lehighton finished the event unblemished, the Blue Bombers posted a 2-3 mark.Palmerton went 2-1 in Pool B, which included a 38-36 defeat of Springfield Delco, a 45-23 loss to Pine Grove and a 48-30 triumph over Allentown Central Catholic. After their loss to Lehighton in the semis, the Blue Bombers rounded out the day with a 49-27 defeat at the hands of East Stroudsburg North.Despite the losses, Palmerton head coach Justin Petersen was happy with the continued improvement he saw from his team on this day."I thought this was one of our better tournaments so far," he said. "We still had to give up some forfeits, but some guys stepped up and that was great to see."We got some contributions from throughout the lineup, which was nice."Tre Nelson went a perfect 5-0 for the Blue Bombers, while Dan Russo, Mathew Wolfe, Zack Christman, Jared Mooney and John Iles all went 4-1.Former state qualifier Zachary Graver won his first two matches of the afternoon, but was unable to compete in Palmerton's final three contests because of an injury.Following a 3-2 showing at last weekend's Anthracite Duals, Petersen was happy to get his team into another tournament with a wide-range of teams, which he hopes will further prepare the Blue Bombers for the postseason."It's good to get some different names on the schedule," Petersen noted. "You don't want to see the same guys over and over again, because going into districts, you're going to see them again anyway."After a dual against Tamaqua on Wednesday, Lehighton will gear up for the Schuylkill League Tournament Friday and Saturday at Blue Mountain High School. The opportunity to make a statement in their first year of competition in the annual league event is one the Indians are looking forward to."We have a lot of guys that are really hungry to get in that because we didn't have that in our previous league," Williams said of having previously competed in the Mountain Valley Conference. "To now have a tournament where you can be an outright league champion is something that a lot of guys really want to go after and get."
