Pleasant Valley Director Yozwiak recommends policy initiative

At the conclusion of last week’s Pleasant Valley Board of Education meeting, Director Donna Yozwiak suggested that the board consider the adoption of a new committee responsible for the creation and review of district policies.

“Policymaking is one of the most important responsibilities of an elected school board,” Yozwiak said when interviewed after the meeting. “We have many documents in a school district that impact policy that need regular review as well as student/parent handbooks, employee handbooks, budget and financial documents, grants/funding requirements, board resolutions and the comprehensive plan.”

“The Policy Committee establishes policy review schedules, ensures flexibility for revisions, and correlates with timelines with other documents. In addition, the Policy Committee communicates policy with all stakeholders as parents, employees and member of the community.”

Yozwiak said that she got the idea for the committee from a recommendation from the Pennsylvania School Boards Association. Yozwiak will be attending the PSBA convention in Hershey this week and hopes to bring back more information for the other board members to consider.
