The Slatington Veterans Memorial Committee will hold a Veterans Day Service and commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Armistice, ending World War I (The Great War).
The service will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday — Veterans Day — at the Slatington Memorial Park, Second and Main streets in Slatington, the former home of Slatington High School.
The Slatington Veterans Memorial was completed in 2016 after a year-and-a-half of planning, fundraising and construction, and features sponsored engraved bricks of living and deceased servicemen from all over the Northern Lehigh area, as well as a monument recognizing servicemen from the area who died in service to their country.
The service and commemoration will be a patriotic but solemn event, replete with history, music, patriotic songs, prayers, speeches, taps and a rifle salute.
Special recognition will be given to the seven men from the Northern Lehigh area killed in action during WWI. Biographies and letters these soldiers wrote to their families back home while stationed in Europe will be read.
In case of inclement weather, the service will be held inside St. John’s UCC Church directly across Kuntz Alley behind the park.
Following the service, light refreshments and fellowship will be available in the basement of the church.
