Local sports roundup: Games of October 10
Northwestern, Marian and Pleasant Valley all recorded volleyball wins on Tuesday.
VOLLEYBALL
Catasauqua-Northwestern
Northwestern cruised to a 25-9, 25-13, 25-17 Colonial League win over Catasauqua.
Libero Emily Corke had 24 digs, and three assists for the Tigers. Setter Ashley Bennicoff had 19 assists, two kills and one dig, while defensive specialist Grace Shuhay added five digs. Outside hitters Shante Duminie and Jovina Fager added seven kills apiece.
Shenandoah-Marian
Marian defeated Shenandoah Valley in straight sets, 25-11, 25-9, 25-8.
Gianna Agosti led the Fillies with 25 assists and 11 aces. Jasmine Mooney had 11 kills and five digs, Carly Kosciolek added seven kills and four digs, and Emily Meier contributed five kills and four digs.
Pleasant Valley-PM East
Pleasant Valley had little trouble taking down Pocono Mountain East in an Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Mountain Division battle, winning 25-19, 25-19, 25-12.
Des Powell had 12 kills and 14 digs for the Bears, Katie Frankunas had 12 kills and three digs, Renee Mapa added nine kills and five blocks, and Cameron Caffrey contributed 32 assists, four aces and eight digs.
Pottsville-Lehighton
Pottsville posted a 25-10, 16-25, 25-19, 25-23 Schuylkill League win over Lehighton.
Emily Haberman put up 26 assists and 10 digs for the Indians. Also playing well were Lillian Brown (27 digs), Emily Miller (10 kills), Vanessa Ahner (nine kills) and
Isabelle Meckes (eight kills, two aces).
Palmerton-Notre Dame
Notre Dame of Green Pond made quick work of Palmerton in the Colonial League, taking a 25-6, 25-20, and 25-25 decision.

Blue Mountain-Tamaqua
Blue Mountain raced to a straight-set win over Tamaqua in Schuylkill League action, 25-6, 25-13, 25-13.
For the Raiders, Ella McLaughlin had 10 digs and three kills, Kaitlyn Stauffenberg added five assists, and Amy Hadesty added three blocks and a kill.
FIELD HOCKEY
Lehighton-Liberty
Liberty’s Olivia Sahyadak had a huge game in leading her team to 7-1 non-league victory over Lehighton.
Sahyadak scored all seven goals for the Hurricanes.
Maura Phelan scored the lone goal for Lehighton (11-5).
No. Lehigh-Salisbury
Salisbury upended Northern Lehigh 2-1 in Colonial League action.
Isabella Martinez and Madison Jewell both tallied goals for the Falcons, while teammate Katie Rutta assisted on one of those scores.
Northwestern-So. Lehigh
Southern Lehigh proved too much for Northwestern in Colonial League action, gaining a 4-0 shutout victory.
Meghan Reese scored a hat trick for the Lady Spartans.
The Spartans held a 16-2 edge in shots on goal, as well as a 14-4 advantage in corners.
Catasauqua-Palmerton
Palmerton routed Catasauqua 5-0 in Colonial League action.
Kailyn Kolnik scored a hat trick for the Lady Bombers, while Sayler Burke scored twice. Allyssa Frantz and Emily Baumgardt both added assists.
GIRLS SOCCER
No. Schuylkill-Lehighton
Lehighton scored a goal in each half to upend North Schuylkill, 2-0, in Schuylkill League action.
Aubrey Blasiak gave the locals the early lead, before Julia Frey’s penalty kick added insurance in the second half of play.
Thera Hibbler had five saves in the second half to maintain the shutout for the Tribe.
Catasauqua-Palmerton
Palmerton picked up a 2-0 shutout win over Catasauqua in a Colonial League bout.
Carissa Fallon and Madison Martinez both notched goals in the winning effort for the Lady Bombers, who outshot the Rough Riders 22-6.
Baylee Guedes had four saves to record the shutout.
BOYS SOCCER
Jim Thorpe-No. Schuylkill
Jim Thorpe used a big second half to pull away from North Schuylkill and claim a 7-0 Schuylkill League Division I victory.
Chris Williams recorded a hat trick for the Olympians, who scored six goals in the second half to blow the game open. Ryder Wallace had two goals and two assists, while Ian Montelius and Ethan Melber each scored once.
Kingsley Ehling made five saves in recording the shutout.
ES South-Pleasant Vy
Pleasant Valley blanked East Stroudsburg South, 2-0, in Eastern Pennsylvania Conference action.
Malichai Jones and Logan Meckes scored the Bears’ goals, while Christopher D’Allsandro and Kyle Dooner added assists.
The Bears held a 5-1 edge in shots on goal.
Pine Grove-Tamaqua
Tamaqua pulled out a 2-1 Schuylkill League win over Pine Grove.
Jacob Rudy got the Raiders on the board early in the second half. He then added an assist on a Brian Milot goal that proved to be the game winner.
Mitchell Lesh scored a late goal for the Cardinals.
Reese Szabo had three saves in the net for Tamaqua, which finished with a 10-6 advantage in shots.
CROSS COUNTRY
Moravian, Saucon Vy., NDGP, Palisades, No. Lehigh, Palmerton, Northwestern
The Northwestern girls went 4-0 in a multi-team Colonial League meet. The trio of Madeline Consuelos, Molly Tarvin and Kailyn Jones finished in third through fifth to lead the Tigers.
The Northern Lehigh girls went 2-2 with Reagan Pender’s second-place finish leading the way. Hanna Nesfeder took 17th to lead the Palmerton girls, who didn’t have enough runners to register a team score.
In the boys meet, Phillip Castrine’s seventh-place finish helped Northwestern to a 2-2 showing.
Jacob Martinez had a strong race with a second-place finish for Palmerton, which went 0-4. Preston Kemery came in 10th for No. Lehigh, which went 1-3.

Tamaqua defeated Nativity, 32-22.
The Raiders were led by Wingler and Zoe Seltzer, who had 12 and 10 points, respectively.
MID. SCHOOL FOOTBALL
Tamaqua-Lehighton
Lehighton defeated Tamaqua, 33-6.
Cam Knappenberger scored on runs of 17, 43 and 51 yards for the Indians (4-1-1). Hunter Crum added a two-yard TD run and 50-yard touchdown reception.
Defensively for the Indians, Zimmerman and Smith had fumble recoveries, while Knappenberger had an interception.
Tamaqua (3-5) scored on a 17-yard pass from Nate Gregoire to Steve Kesteckey.
