Weissport receives garbage collection bid with hefty increase

During the Weissport Council meeting held Monday, a single sealed garbage contract bid for 2019 was opened.

Council hoped to receive multiple bids but only received one from County Waste, the current garbage collection provider in the borough.

The bid calls for over $20,000 increase in fees. With the increase, Councilman Thomas Ketchledge explained residents could see garbage bills jump from $185.60 to $372 for one year.

Secretary-Treasurer Bill Donovan said currently there is a surplus in the garbage fund budget. He told council they can get through the year without passing increases to residents, but the garbage fund would be depleted.

Council President Arland Moyer Sr. announced council will hold a special meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday to discuss the garbage contract bid with solicitor Greg Mousseau.

Also during the meeting it was announced that Santa will be visiting the Weissport park from 5-7 p.m. Saturday. The borough Christmas tree will be lit during the event. There will be free hot dogs and hot chocolate for the children in attendance.
