Anthracite splits weekend series
A wall can withstand a battering ram for only so long before it caves.
That's basically what happened in the District 18 9-10 year-old Little League baseball playoff game Sunday in Nesquehoning as Valley West defeated Anthracite White, 6-1.The contest was the second in the best of three series. In the first game on Saturday, Anthracite White pulled an incredible come-from-behind victory over Valley West, 10-9. Anthracite scored four runs - after they had two outs and the bases empty in the bottom of the last inning. The third game in the series will be played at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Nesquehoning.Sunday's gameAnthracite White's defense had to rise to the challenge several times against Valley West.Three times VW loaded the bases in the first three innings. But all three times the resilient "D" of Anthracite stopped them from scoring.Eventually Anthracite's defense broke down. Valley West, the North Division champions, scored five runs in two late innings to stop Anthracite. The game was tied 1-1 going into the bottom of the fourth inning before Valley West's offensive battering ram eventually broke through. In the fourth, three singles and two Anthracite errors helped the Conyngham-based team score three runs. The wall collapsed in the bottom of the fifth with Valley West scoring two more runs, making it a 6-1 ball game. There was a glimmer of hope for a comeback in the top of the sixth when Anthracite got the bases loaded with two outs, but an infield out ended the threat."They're a very good team," Valley West Manager Jeff Antolick said of Anthracite. "Any time we face them, we've got to come out and play six innings."Antolick said he feels part of the reason for the loss on Saturday was because his number one player was injured and couldn't play. His son, Brett Antolick, sustained a knee injury last Wednesday that required stitches.Antolick didn't play Saturday but started at first base Sunday. He then pitched that last two innings. At the plate, he was 3-for-4, including a two-run double. On the mound, he gave up one hit, walked two and struck out two.He is scheduled to be the starting pitcher against Anthracite White on Tuesday.Mike Pascoe, assistant coach for Anthracite, said he feels his team was a little tired on Sunday following that thrilling Saturday comeback."I think our kids expended a lot of energy yesterday," he said.Pascoe praised Chase Weaver for his work in center field, especially making several deep fly-ball catches. A highlight, he pointed out, was a double-play executed by catcher Michael Pascoe and shortstop Matt Machalik executed in the second inning, which also was a vivid example of how well the defense of Anthracite played.Valley West threatened early and often as they left the bases loaded in the first, had runners on the corners in the second before Anthracite turned its double play, and loaded the bases with no one out in the third before Anthracite pitcher Brad Hood escaped the threat thanks in large part to a pair of strikeouts.Anthracite's only run came in the third when Machalik got a single, went to second on a Pascoe walk, stole third, and came home on a fielder's choice.Anthracite 001 000 - 1 4 4Valley West 100 32x - 6 8 3Brad Hood, Kokinda (4) and Pascoe; Pettit, Antolick and Habel.
