Black Diamonds win opener
The defending Keystone Senior Babe Ruth champion Towamensing Yankees made some mistakes and the Panther Valley Black Diamonds made sure they paid for them.
The Black Diamonds rolled to a 9-3 victory in the first game of a best of three championship series on Monday."Anytime you get more than three outs in an inning, you want to make them pay for it," Black Diamonds' head coach Rich Evanko said. "In the fifth when we got seven runs, they made some mistakes out there and we ended up capitalizing on them."We need those kinds of breaks sometimes in order to get a win like that. You got to capitalize on mistakes and tonight we did."Panther Valley showed early that it was going to take advantage of every opportunity that Towamensing presented. In the bottom of the first, Yankees' pitcher Ben Weber walked both Anthony Collevechio and Frank Nietz. A two-out error then allowed both runners to score. While Weber held the Black Diamonds to one hit over the first four innings of play, it was in the fifth inning when the damage was done.A botched rundown play by Towamensing helped load the bases for the Black Diamonds. Nietz came through with a two-run single. After a Darren Goida hit, Matt Hudicka followed with another two-run single. Goida eventually scored on another Yankee miscue before RBIs by Luke Stano and Anthony Micholik made it 9-1.The Yankees got a couple of runs back in the sixth as pinch runner Spencer Moyer came home on a throwing error and John Frace scored on Ty Achtermann fielder's choice ground ball. But that was all the Yankees could muster against Panther Valley pitcher Stano, who scattered seven hits in a complete-game victory."We made mistakes and we paid for them," Towamensing coach Don Hunter said. "And, I made some too. But, we definitely paid for them tonight."But, you know what, you come back two days from now and you play again. It's a new day on Wednesday when we come out on our own field at Towamensing. So, we got to put this behind us and take it from there."While the No. 3 seeded Black Diamonds took game one last night, Evanko knows all too well the No. 5 seeded Yankees, who knocked off the top-seeded Franklin Township Shockers in the semifinals, will be ready for revenge when the two teams meet on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Towamensing."They're going to come out with all cylinders firing," Evanko said. "We got to be ready for it. They're not going to lay down. They're too good of a team."We just hope we can limit our mistakes and hopefully play solid defense, solid baseball all-around. Down there at their place, they're going to give us a battle no doubt about it."Nietz led the Black Diamonds with two singles, two runs scored and two RBIs. Collevechio recorded two walks and two runs scored.Silfies paced the Yankees with two singles. Achtermann added a single and two RBIs.Towamensing 000 102 0 - 3 7 4Panther Valley 200 070 x - 9 7 4Weber, Silfies (5) and George; Stano and Schmidt. W - Stano. L - Weber.
