No. Lehigh field hockey falls in overtime
PEN ARGYL - Northern Lehigh did everything head coach Jess Frew wanted.
But the Bulldogs still came up just short, losing 1-0 to Pen Argyl in Friday's District 11 Class AA field hockey quarterfinal.The Knights' Dana Evans scored the game winner with 45 seconds left in the first overtime period on an assist from Lacy Hempeler."It was a great battle," said Knights head coach Frank Rowley. "I thought both teams played their hearts out. It's a playoff atmosphere. I thought Northern Lehigh stepped up their game from last time. I knew they were going to do that."They're well coached. They play hard all the time. I knew today was going to be a battle and it didn't disappoint."Playing 6-on-7 because of a green card (two-minute penalty), Northern Lehigh was trying to get out of the first overtime and get back to full strength. The Bulldog defense had already stopped two Pen Argyl corners in the 15-minute overtime, but for the first time all game they got multiple shots in one rush.No. Lehigh keeper Veronica Green stopped two shots in the overtime and Bulldog midfielder Kate Ziegler turned away another before Evans gathered a rebound and sent it in.Pen Argyl (13-6), the No. 3 seed, advances to face No. 2 Southern Lehigh Tuesday. The Spartans beat Northwestern 2-0 in the quarterfinals.Northern Lehigh (8-10-1) was the N. 6 seed in districts and had over two weeks off before Friday's game, while the Knights played in last week's Colonial League title game."It's super tough," said Northern Lehigh head coach Jess Frew. "We had two scrimmages. They were helpful but it's not the same as being in a competitive, officiated game."Her team performed everything it had worked on during that time off, but couldn't get a goal past Knights keeper Casey Hanlon, who had nine saves."I think we put up a good fight," said Frew. "We really broke down the components of the game and we did execute all those things. We just had a hard time finishing in the circle. But the defense was excellent. The level of play has increased and I just think they're doing a better job."SHOTS …The Knights outshot Northern Lehigh 11-9. Green made five saves for the Bulldogs and several defenders also played well in front of the goal.GETTING CLOSER … The Bulldogs played two tight games this season. While Northern Lehigh lost 3-1 to the Knights in the regular season, In that game, the goal-ahead goal wasn't scored until the final minutes.FAMILIAR FOES….Pen Argyl now faces Southern Lehigh for the third time this season. The Spartans beat the Knights 3-0 (Sept. 23) during the regular season and beat them 2-1 in the first round of the Colonial League playoffs.
