Weatherly boys could be 'work in progress'
Weatherly head coach Ron Cann is no stranger to the idea of rebuilding. Throughout his nine seasons as leader of the Wreckers, he has experienced his share of "down" years.
Even though this season should emulate that same type of year, Cann and company intend to work harder than ever, with two words forming their approach to this season."I've been preaching two words to them since the very first practice and that's competitiveness and effort," Cann said. "If the kids buy into it, and if they hold up their end of the deal, and give me effort and try their hardest to be competitive, then we should be right on track."Luke Reiner, Brett Kelly and Nick Miller have all graduated from last year's program, and Cann is hoping to replace that scoring production with a group effort."We're very young to start out the season," Cann said. "We are going to gain experience as the season goes along, and we have some strong players to help us in the right direction."Leading the Wreckers will be a solid group of athletes. Headlining that group is senior forward Dillon Bizarre, who remains the sole returner with a healthy amount of varsity experience. Senior Jake Stover and junior Zach Peiser will be mainstays down low to fill out the frontcourt.A pair of sophomores will maintain the ball-handling abilities and be Cann's floor generals, as Zach Moon and Gary Buck earn their playing time."Last year, Moon had an ACL injury and only played maybe 10 games for us, so we're looking forward to having him back," Cann said. "Buck had a little varsity time last year and is looking to improve this season. Dillon Bizarre can play all three positions for us, if we needed him to, and he's an athlete with the most experience for us."We're expecting to get a majority of our scoring from Moon and Buck, but Peiser is a very big body and we would like to go inside to him, and use him as a strength."Cann was also quick to mention that Jeremy Moser (Fr., G), Steph Yurchak (So., F/C), Jared Zaremba (Fr., G), and John Arthur (So., F) will see plenty of action and should be more than capable to contribute before the end of the season.Wrecker fans can expect a different look to the team's offense and defense, as in the past, due to a lack of height, Cann would incorporate pressure defense to force their opponents into turnovers. This would turn into fastbreaks and potential easy buckets at the other end. However, this year, the veteran wants to try a different approach,"In the past, we would typically try and get the ball inside, make the defense collapse, and then we could kick it out for jumpers," Cann said. "This year, we would like to work the ball around the outside and eventually try finding open guys inside."Cann admits that many of his players need to adapt to the varsity level, and do so quickly. "We are going to need to improve on the fundamentals on both sides of the ball because that next step that these young men are taking - everything is faster. Hopefully, we can improve with each passing day."The eternal realist, Cann knows things need to happen in order to reach that next level of his team's success."We are a work-in-progress," Cann admits. "We are going to need to work for everything that we get, but they're a hardworking group of kids, they're coachable and do whatever it is that we ask of them. We know there will be mistakes, too, but if they give that effort, and try their best to be competitive, we can potentially make up for those mistakes."
