NW girls give Deutsch 200th career victory

Chris Deutsch probably took Tuesday night's Colonial League loss to Southern Lehigh just as hard as his Northwestern girls' basketball team did.

So the Tigers' mentor wanted to see his players get back to their winning ways as soon as possible. The Tigers answered their coach's wishes by posting a 69-29 CL victory over Northern Lehigh on Friday night."I just like how we bounced back from the loss against Southern Lehigh," Deutsch said. "I thought we just had to jump on them from the start and that's what you have to do against teams like this. You can't give them belief that they can stay in the game."I thought we played with a lot of good energy, shared the ball, and did a nice job recovering from the other day."Erika Thomas gave the Tigers the necessary spark to put Tuesday's loss behind them for good. The Tiger senior scored 12 of her 18 points in the opening quarter. In fact, she scored half of her total even before the Bulldogs put single point on the board. Thomas helped pace a 17-0 Tigers' spurt to begin the game, which was the kind of start that Deutsch wanted to see. Jill Olewine eventually ended the Northwestern run by hitting two free throws. The Tigers owned a 41-11 lead at intermission. While Thomas went on to finish with 18 points, and Tiger teammate Leighanna Leister banged the boards to pile up a 15-point performance, the Bulldogs' sophomore Kaitlin Hoffman showed that she's going to be a force to reckon with in the future.Despite seeing her team already in a huge deficit, Hoffman refused to give up. Instead, she put up an 18-point performance of her own."They didn't quit and that's a credit to them," Deutsch said. "They're a young team too. You know what, their girls came out and really showed us something in the second half, but I knew they were going to come out and play."While Northwestern moves to 4-2 overall (3-1 in CL), Northern Lehigh still searches for its first win of the season."You're going to take lumps along the way as it's a growing process," Northern Lehigh coach Tony Thomas said. "When you learn to walk, you will always fall down. But, you have to be able to get back up and take it game by game, minute by minute and never quit."These kids have to continue to play and that's what we do. We try to get them going and to believe that they're going to get those wins."MILESTONE FOR DEUTSCH ... With the win, Deutsch recorded his 200th career coaching victory with Northwestern. Deutsch has been involved with the program for 20 years (13 as girls head coach, seven as boys assistant). "It means three things. One, I had great players for 13 years. Two, I have had great assistant coaches for 13 years. And, three, I'm probably getting a little older now from when I first started. I look at it as a team thing. It's not about me. It's about the program."WHO LET THE DAWG OUT ... Bulldog sophomore Kaitlin Hoffman is having a fine start to her season. In the first eight games, Hoffman has hit double figures three times, including 18 point s last night. She was a single bucket away from hitting double digits in three other games. She's averaging 12.5 points per game this season.NORTHWESTERNStitzel 0-0-0-0, Hambrick 3-0-0-6, Leister 6-3-4-15, Chisdak 0-0-0-0, Sevrain 3-0-2-6, Pasquale 0-2-2-2, Koenig 3-0-0-6, Christopher 3-0-0-6, Dietrich 2-2-4-6, Thomas 7-4-5-18, Sekerak 2-0-0-4, Smith 0-0-0-0.
