Hurricanes use depth to beat PV

Pleasant Valley head wrestling coach Justin Micklos knew it was going to be tough to pull out a team victory over Bethlehem Liberty knowing the Bears were going to forfeit four matches.

All he was hoping for was improvement from his wrestlers as they end the first month of the season.Despite a 47-15 loss, Micklos saw five of his team members come away with wins and he was impressed with that, since the Hurricanes also had five wins in matches wrestled."I think the guys that wrestled did a real good job," Micklos said afterwards. "There were a lot of good matches. There is a lot of stuff we need to improve on, but it's still early in the season. We'll go back, look at film, break it down and get to where we need to go."Two of the wrestlers Micklos was talking about were 195-pounder Shane McDermott and 220-pounder Trent Thomas.Trailing 4-0 early, McDermott decisioned Jaret Figueroa, 9-7, and Thomas stretched out a 7-3 decision over Andrue Velasquez.McDermott led 4-0 after the opening period, then saw Figueroa come back to tie it 5-5 in the middle stanza. McDermott used two escapes and a takedown in between a Figueroa reversal in the final two minutes to win it.Thomas, on the other hand, built up a 4-1 lead with a takedown and two back points in the first two minutes, then added a takedown in the second period and an escape in the third period for a 7-3 win."Trent's a great kid and Shane, I can bump him up," said Micklos. "I know I can bump Trent up to 220 and he'll come through for me and he did it again."After five straight wins by the Hurricanes gave them a 33-9 advantage, Jason Jacobi ended the streak with a 8-2 decision of Joseph Cursi at 132 for the Bears.Jacobi and Cursi went into the final two minutes tied at 2-2, but Jacobi used a reversal, a takedown and two back points to win going away. The Bears won the final two matches of the night when Garrett Gouger grabbed a 4-2 decision over Gunner Anglovich and Trevor Dorn decisioned Damon Moyer, 7-2.Besides the forfeits, the Hurricanes managed to get their five wins in the matches that were wrestled from Abraham Dimmitt at 182, Luke Warner at 120, Josaiah Vasquez at 138, Jasson Morales at 145 and Anthony Emig at 152.BACK-TO-BACK ... "The great thing about Trevor is he's a junior and he comes through when I need him so it's great to have him on the team," said Micklos. "Gouger is still moving forward and he's doing well so that's a good thing."LOOKING AHEAD ... Micklos now hopes his Bears stay focused and come away with some good individual performances in the Bethlehem Hurricane Classic over the holidays.Liberty 47, Pleasant Vy. 15182 - Abraham Dimmitt (L) maj. dec.
