Tamaqua teens performing in ‘Urinetown the Musical’

Two Tamaqua area teens will be performing in the cast of “Urinetown the Musical” at DM Performance Works Factory Theatre in Nuremburg May 10-12 and May 17-19.

In the not-so-distant future, a terrible water shortage and 20-year drought has led to a government ban on private toilets and a proliferation of paid public toilets, owned and operated by a single megalomaniac company: the Urine Good Company. If the poor don’t obey the strict laws prohibiting free urination, they’ll be sent to the dreaded and mysterious “Urinetown.” After too long under the heel of the malevolent Caldwell B. Cladwell, the poor stage a revolt, led by a brave young hero, fighting tooth and nail for the freedom to pee “wherever you like, whenever you like, for as long as you like, and with whomever you like.”

A brilliant satire modeled off the plays of Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht, “Urinetown” is a wickedly funny, fast-paced and surprisingly intelligent comedic romp.

Sydney Powell, 19, will be playing Little Becky Two Shoes, one of the poor who also happens to be pregnant and frequents the public restrooms. Sydney has been dancing since the age of 2½ and has been doing theater for many years. She just finished her freshman year at Lehigh University, where she is majoring in biology pre-med.

Olivia Stettler, 17, will be playing Hope Cladwell, a good-hearted and naive young woman fresh out of the Most Expensive University of the World and about to work at her father’s company. Hope believes there is good in everyone. Olivia has been singing since the age of 6 and doing theater since the age of 9. “Urinetown” will be her 39th show. She is a junior at Marian Catholic High School.

Other cast members include: Jessica Werbin, Liam Huff, Kaitlyn Bellizia, Jose Rosenstock, Joey Gans, Zachary Sessock, Nate Kuhns, Joshua Plesce, Noah Witner, Lily Wirth, Brandon Bartley, Logan Padden, Madison Youngcourt and Ali Rancho.

Show dates at times are 7 p.m. May 10, 11, 17 and 18 and 2 p.m. May 12 19. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for students/seniors. Tickets will be sold at the door or can be purchased online at www.ticketpeak.com/dmpw. Call or text 570-710-7244 with any questions.
