Marian handles Hurricanes

The Fillies needed a change.

Marian head coach Paul Brutto decided to flip the switch on Marian's full court pressure defense during a Schuylkill Haven timeout late in the first quarter. The adjustment paid off significantly, and the game was history after that.Marian created countless turnovers and allowed just one field goal throughout the rest of the contest, cruising to a 61-17 Schuylkill League victory over Schuylkill Haven."We were sluggish at the beginning," explained Brutto. "I wanted to get us going a little bit. That (press) perked us up."We got some turnovers and some easy baskets out of it. We picked our intensity level up. That happens often when we go fullcourt. They (Haven) struggled with it and we got the results that we wanted."Struggle was an understatement for Schuylkill Haven as Marian ripped off a 28-2 run after the late timeout in the initial frame. During a sequence within the big Marian spurt, the Fillies forced turnovers on 17 consecutive possessions. It was just a five-point affair after the first quarter. But the chaotic defense turned into instant Fillies' offense - which was much needed, according to Brutto."We haven't been running our half court offense very well," he said. "But tonight we ran it a little bit more effectively."Brutto's squad ran its half court offense with ease and patience. The Fillies relentlessly weaved around screens in their sets. The motion combined with crisp ball movement to create a ton of passing lanes for high percentage baskets."We need to keep improving at it," Brutto said. "Once you get to playoff teams, it's more of a half court game. You can't press them as much because they will have better guards. Our execution tonight was better than it probably has been the past couple of weeks."Vanessa Whitecavage led Marian with a game-high 14 points, and passed the ball effectively to her forwards under the basket all night long. Savannah Krushinsky added 12 points, while Brenna Karnish chipped in eight. The pair combined to dominate the glass."Brenna (Karnish) has been more assertive on the boards the last few games and Savannah (Krushinsky) is all over the place," Brutto said. "She has a nose for the ball, it's kind of instinctive. She goes after everything. Those two need to rebound for us, because it makes your defense better when you're limiting them to one shot instead of multiple looks at the basket."TOTAL TEAM EFFORT… Nine different Fillies registered points during the lopsided victory. The bench combined for 20 points."I thought everybody did a nice job," Brutto said. "Our bench did a nice job coming in and running the offense. We were very unselfish and did a nice job of making some extra passes. It was a nice team win. Everyone got to contribute."BEST DEFENSIVE EFFORT… The 17 points was the lowest total the Fillies have held any opponent to this season. Marian limited Notre Dame of East Stroudsburg to just 18 points earlier this month.SCHUYLKILL HAVENR.Werez 1-0-0-2, Nester 1-0-0-2, Donati 1-1-2-3, M.Werez 1-4-6-6, Pruden 0-0-0-0, Umbenhauer 0-1-2-1, Bernitsky 0-0-0-0, Farr 1-1-2-3.
