Palmerton prepares for Christmas in the Park

Palmerton’s hallmark event is just around the corner.

That would be in the form of its sixth annual Christmas in the Park event, scheduled to take place Saturday in the borough park. The rain date is Sunday.

Sponsored by the Palmerton Holiday Lights Committee, this year’s attraction will feature 104 decorated Christmas trees on display supplied by PennMar Trees LLC.

But with rain in the forecast, the committee remains hopeful it can hold the event as planned, according to event Chairwoman Michele O’Neill.

“Our goal is to still hold it on Saturday,” O’Neill said. “There is the potential that we might try to give vendors an opportunity to open early, but that decision has not been made yet.”

Until then, O’Neill said the committee plans to keep a very close eye on the weather, and added, “We will not make the decision as a committee most likely until very early Saturday morning.

“We’ll do the best we can,” she said. “If we can pull it off on Saturday, we’ll aim for that.”

O’Neill said those interested in attending should check the Palmerton Christmas in the Park Facebook page, as well as the event page for Palmerton’s Christmas in the Park, and of course word of mouth.

The schedule of events is as follows:

• Noon: Opening ceremony.

• 12:15 p.m.: S.S. Palmer Elementary School Chorus Bell Choir of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.

• 1-3 p.m.: Santa will greet all children on the Bandstand. Children must be in line by 2:30 p.m. to see Santa. Goody bags sponsored by Palmerton Pool Pals, and Country Harvest will be given out to all children, and there will be chances to win bicycles, wagons, scooters and gift cards.

In the event of rain both days, Santa will stop at one of the local fire companies to give out the goody bags from 1-3 p.m. Sunday.

• 1:15-4 p.m.: Horse Drawn Wagon Rides.

• 2-3 p.m.: Strolling Brass Quintet.

• 3:15 p.m.: Towamensing Elementary School Chorus.

• 3:45 p.m.: Holiday Homecoming Chorus.

• 4:30 p.m.: Christian Action Council of Palmerton Area Churches will host a Christmas carol singalong with public participation.

• 4:45 p.m.: Lighting of the trees, followed by Christmas caroling until around 5:30 p.m.

The event will also have various craft vendors and will include bake sales, hot dogs, gourmet hot chocolate, hot soups, nachos and cheese, and beverages.

Donations of new unwrapped toys will be accepted for Toys for Tots, while nonperishable food items will be collected for the CACPAC Food Pantry.

In addition, new wreaths have been placed on the poles courtesy of fundraising efforts by the Palmerton Holiday Lights Committee.

O’Neill said visitors who attend are certain to be in for a real treat.

“It’s an old-fashioned Christmas community event,” she said. “There are some (trees) that are decorated that are amazing; people are going above and beyond.”
