Colts cruise past Weatherly

HOMETOWN - If Marian had any open wounds after a disappointing loss to Mahanoy Area one night earlier, it found a balm to sooth the pain on Thursday night.

Torching an outmanned Weatherly team, the Colts reeled in a 60-23 Schuylkill League win, and in the process, qualified for the District 11 Class AA tournament."The good thing is we didn't have to wait around for a few days and dwell on the loss to Mahanoy Area before playing another game," Marian coach John Patton said. The no-doubt-about it win started quickly with a 16-2 run, which evolved into a 33-12 halftime lead. The Colts eventually kicked the contest into the mercy rule by opening a 40-point spread before the final quarter was started."We're a very youthful team, but we're learning," said Weatherly coach Ron Cann. "We're taking losses, sure, but if these kids stick with it, they put the work in, there will be results."Cann knew the Wreckers (4-15, 0-11) were in over their heads against Marian."We're not physical or mature enough to matchup with them," he said. "They've got some really good players, they hit the boards, and they can run the floor."There was enough cannon fodder to go around in the scoring lineup for the Colts (10-8, 7-4). John Woitko drained 10 points, including a couple of triples for the lone double-digit scorer on the night. Teammates Brandon Mohammad and Tony Colleveichio both collected nine points, with Mohammad swatting four blocks, including two on the same play."He does defend the rim for us," Patton said of his 6-4 junior. "It's the kind of defense we've been looking for … it's really big for us at this time of the year."The Colts' Ethan Kuczynski opened the first quarter with seven quick points, before Josh Inama, Ryan Karchner, Colleveichio and Adam Cortese helped to build the 21-poiint halftime lead.Weatherly never could get its footing, despite seven points from the hand of freshman Jared Zaremba."We play a lot of underclassman," noted Cann pointing to Zaremba as a potential cornerstone. "It's all about working hard, and getting better. If these kids put the time in, the results will be there."GLASS CLEANERS …Marian cleaned up with 35 rebounds, with reserve Jake Paluck getting seven boards for the Colts. Jake Stover had six to lead Weatherly.MORE NUMBERS ... Mohammad has blocked eight shots in his last two games for the Colts. Marian shot 22-for-41 from the floor.
