'Hairspray' at Pleasant Valley

This weekend Pleasant Valley High School presents its spring musical "Hairspray."

The musical takes place in 1962 Baltimore where high school student Tracy Turnblad, played by Lizzie Larregui, dreams of dancing on a local television show and dating the local heart throb, Link Larkin, played by Kurt Ammermann.When the opportunity to dance on the Corny Collins Show presents itself, Tracy's dad, played by Dan Smith, encourages his daughter to pursue her dreams, while her mother, played by Erin Berger, warns her that the "image-conscious people on the show would judge her because of her weight.""Hairspray" addresses many of the issues that plagued teens in the 1960s and still to this day. Tracy struggles with self-image, heartache and trying to fit in. Her best friend Penny, played by Liz Eberhardt, struggles with an overprotective mother and forbidden love.Because of her love of dance, Tracy befriends Seaweed J. Stubbs, played by Kevin Ramsey, and his sister, Lil Inez, played by Nicole Brooks-Miller, and their mother, Motormouth Maybelle, played by Yesha Biney. The play also addresses race relations and segregation in the 1960s as well.Much of what is portrayed in "Hairspray" is still relative in 2017.Corny Collins is played by Brendan Gilleece. His producer, Velma Von Tussle, is played by Deanna Kahn. Her daughter Amber is portrayed by D.J. Greenweig.Other featured cast members are Dylan Firestone, Zachary Hansen, Paige Hinton, Sofia Janak, Katie Kelsey, Victoria Lindner, Livia Mackes, Jose Rosario, Kamryn Scrivens and Diamond Weaver.Underclassmen cast members include: Brianna Barth, Miranda Carmella, Brianna Cicalese, Rachel Estrella, Imani Grayson, Stephanie Gunther, Arielle Holding, Estrella Kodjovi, Jada Mable, Kayla Ramsey, Grace Trebour, Danielle Cleary, Olivia Dahl, Willow Krechel, Grace Petillo, Kaitlyn Seawood, Taylor Caretta, Emily Gethen, Olivia Holcomb, Giovanni Marini, Curtis Ramos, Sam Rudolf and Zachary Smith.Dan and Marcie Mulligan are once again working hard to direct the Pleasant Valley High School spring musical with the help of the student orchestra, directed by Sarah Klein."The production will be a colorful spectacle," said Dan Mulligan. "With more dancing than any other production before on the Pleasant Valley stage."Show times are 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday evening and 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $8 for adults and $5 for students.
