Palmerton honoring 1956 championship team on Friday

This season marks the 100th anniversary of Palmerton High School’s first official boys basketball team.

The Bomber program will be celebrating its centennial season during its home opener against Lehighton on Friday night.The highlight will be a ceremony to honor the 60th anniversary of the 1956 team, which defeated Allen High School for the District 11 Championship. The team went on to win the PIAA Eastern championship and remains the only Palmerton basketball team to reach a state final.The team was led by co-captains Terry Eckert and Robert “Dr Bob” Mlkvy, and by legendary coach Win Evans. Many of the team’s players and/or their families are expected to participate in the event. Bob Capasso from BRC TV-13 will serve as master of ceremonies. The event will occur after the girls varsity game (6 p.m. tipoff) and before the boys game begins.
