Two Berks residents admit stealing over $6,000 in items from Walmart

Two Berks County residents admitted in Carbon County court Monday to stealing over $6,000 worth of merchandise from the Walmart store in Mahoning Township.

Colby Marion Heffner, 23, of Kempton, and Allen Charles Schrader III, 24, of Leesport, both pleaded guilty to one count each of criminal conspiracy-retail theft and criminal conspiracy-criminal mischief.

Township police charged the two for an incident on Oct. 29, 2017, in which they took various electronic items from the store. In fleeing the scene, they caused damages to the store which was included in the restitution ordered by Judge Joseph J. Matika.

Heffner admitted to an ongoing drug addiction problem and told Matika she had spent 28 days in an inpatient drug rehabilitation program and continues outpatient counseling. She also said she has pending criminal charges in Berks County.

Matika placed her on probation for two years and ordered her to make restitution of $3,447.50 to Walmart, render a total of 125 hours of community service, get a drug and alcohol evaluation, zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use, supply a DNA sample and stay out of the store.

Schrader, who is an inmate in the Berks County prison facing other criminal charges, also admitted to a drug addiction problem that he said dates back seven years.

He was sentenced to serve six to one day less 24 months in prison and also ordered to get a drug and alcohol evaluation, make restitution of $3,447.50, render a total of 125 hours of community service when released on parole, supply a DNA sample, stay out of the store and zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use.

On the mischief counts both were placed on probation for a year, consecutive to the other count. Both must also pay court costs of about $1,000 and a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation and parole.
