Big seventh-inning lifts Wreckers over PV

In sports you often here the phrase "we have to take what they give us."

On Thursday, Weatherly did just that against Schuylkill League Division 3 foe Panther Valley. The Wreckers took advantage of nine Panther Valley errors and came through with a five-run outburst in the top of the seventh to escape with a 13-11 victory.Weatherly used two big offensive innings, scoring six in third in addition to the five-run seventh."We broke out offensively today and that's because we just constantly put the ball in play. We were more disciplined at the plate and the girls waited for their pitches," said Weatherly head coach Will Bartel. "It was a great offensive effort overall."This game was a battle of rallies. In the third, the Wreckers shot out to a 7-1 lead. Corra Chincola had two hits and two RBIs in the inning, while Morgan Gower chipped in with a single and an RBI and Necarly Serrate added a single. Gower, Serrate, and Katie Graham all scored runs on passed balls."This was a tough loss for us today because the girls just played so hard. You have to give Weatherly credit because they took advantage of our mistakes," said Panther Valley manager Candace Olson. "A positive I saw today was that our girls played with some confidence and battled back. That's something we've been looking for all season long."The Panthers (1-17, 0-11) did battle back numerous times throughout the game. They chipped away at the Wreckers' six-run lead by scoring in four consecutive innings, leaving the teams tied at 8-8 after six innings. In that stretch for the Panthers, Chloe Miller and Abby Hoben each came through with two RBIs and Robin Krajcir, Megan Pascoe, and Alyssa Navarro all knocked in one run.The tie didn't last long, however.Weatherly (6-8, 3-8) got hot offensively again in the seventh. Hailey Wenner collected a hit and two RBIs to ignite the five-run outburst. Gower and Serrate both added a hit and an RBI. Jackie Henry and Chincola also had hits. The Panthers didn't go away quietly, however. This time it was the Wreckers that had some trouble in the fielding department as they committed two errors in the bottom of the seventh. Panther Valley took advantage, scoring three runs. The Panthers were in prime position to tie the game with runners on second and third and just one out, but a sharply hit ball to the Weatherly second baseman set up a world of trouble for the Panthers.A quick toss from second to first retired Navarro and the PV baserunners got caught in no man's land, allowing Weatherly to toss the ball across the infield and record the game-ending final out."This is a great group of kids that really work hard. They play well together and they have fun together," said Bartel. "We had some injuries ... early on and a lot of the younger girls have stepped up."It's been a roller coaster season, but I'm really proud of this group for their fight."PITCHING IN ... Alexis Wilkinson pitched the first six innings against the Panthers and earned the win. The scoring tally was big, but high error totals on didn't accurately reflect the performances from both Wilkinson and the Panthers' Pascoe.BIG HITTERS ... PV's Claire Kokinda had three hits, including a triple.
