An All-State basketball player, a two-time District 11 track champion, a successful wrestler, a record-breaking quarterback and a championship baseball team make up the 2017 induction class of the Jim Thorpe Area Sports Hall of Fame.
The class includes:• Celeste Robinsonscored 1,691 points and is the all-time leading basketball scorer in Jim Thorpe history. She was a Class 3A First Team All-State selection in 2012 and was also a McDonald's All-American Team nominee that year. Robinson went on to play at Millersville University, scoring 1,235 points in her college career.• Kareem Mickenswon the District 11 Class 2A championship in the 400 meter dash in 2010 and still holds the school record with a time of 50.9 in that event. Also in 2010, he was a member of the district championship 1600 meter relay team. He qualified for States in both events.• Dillon Smithreceived four varsity letters in wrestling and compiled 141 victories during his career. He set the school victories during the 2010 season. Smith qualified for the District 11 and Regional tournaments four straight seasons and qualified for the PIAA State Championships his junior and senior years.• Corey Cinicolawas a record setting quarterback, holding career records for most total passing yards (5,116) and most touchdowns (64). He also hold the single-season record for passing yards (1,954). Cinicola received 11 varsity letters during his Olympian career, participating in football, basketball and baseball. He went on to become a four-year starter in baseball at Lebanon Valley College.•Jim Thorpe's 1989 Carbon-Schuylkill Youth Baseball League teamwon the league championship with an impressive 17-1 record. The team outscored its opponents 208-62 and had a .365 team batting average. Team members were: Joe Butchko, Dave Figura, Kevin Meckes, Brian Rehrig, Nelson Ulshafer, Kyle Armbruster, Mike Kmetz, Lee Marzen, Steve Snerr, Daryl Snyder, Aaron Sebelin, Randy Hydro, Mike Gruber, Mike Petrucci, Jr., Eric Schrantz and Jason Skrimcovsky. The team was coached by Mike Petrucci and Ed Cheese.
