Franklin wins South title

Franklin Township head coach JC Dietz believes his team has the perfect recipe for success.

Few would argue Dietz's assertion, as Franklin scored 68 runs - 38 in one game - through its first three contests of the District 18 8-10-year old Little League Tournament. The roll continued Monday night with an 11-1 win over Towamensing in four innings, a victory that gave Franklin the South Division title."Today's game was just like all of our previous three games," Dietz said. "All of our rallies started with the little things - with walks, taking pitches, working the pitch count up, laying the bunt down, stealing the base."We have kids at the top of our lineup (John Light and Cole Dietz) who when they get on, they cause some trouble. They get on base, and we have a lot of hitters that come up after that, right through the order, even the three guys I bring off the bench, they can all put the ball in play, and they can bunt."There was no shortage of big hits, as Franklin blew the game open with five runs in the second and third innings to grab a 10-0 lead after three."That was huge," Dietz said of the two big innings. "They (Towamensing) have a very good team. They have some very good players."No. 9 hitter Aiden Solt opened the scoring for Franklin with a single in the top of the second inning. After a scoreless first, Solt's hit brought in Jake Lewis, who reached on a one-out walk and moved to third on two wild pitches, and Jesse Waksmunski, who drew a two-out walk and stole second, to give Franklin a 2-0 lead.Light plated Solt with an RBI single to make it 3-0 and later came around to score on an error. Mike Gelatko made it 5-0 with a double that scored Dietz, who walked.Jayse Lawrence started the third with an infield single on the first pitch of the inning, and Lewis followed with a double to the gap to keep the momentum going and give Franklin a 6-0 lead. Derek Behler singled and Lewis came around to score on an error that allowed Behler to take secondKeyden Ahner followed with a walk. Two batters later, Light reached on an error that allowed Ahner and Behler to score to make it 9-0 Franklin. Gelatko brought in Light with his second double of the game to make it 10-0.In the fourth, after Lewis reached on an error, Solt came in to run and promptly stole second base, before coming around to score on an error to push Franklin's lead to 11-0.It was more than enough run support for starting pitcher Dylan Greene, who scattered five hits over four innings, striking out seven.Towamensing got to Greene in the bottom of the fourth inning. Mason George and AJ Borger both singled and Mason Becker was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. Corey Benninger hit into a fielder's choice to score George from third. But Greene struck out the next batter with runners on the corners to end the game.Despite the loss, Towamensing head coach Matthew George is hopeful the experience will benefit his returning players next season."It's a young crew. Half of the kids are coming back next year, which is pretty decent," said George. "We only had about five here tonight that played last year in districts. Experience is a key, and hopefully we're building it up."NEXT … Franklin will play Valley East, which defeated Valley West 21-10 for the North title Monday.
