Tuesday was a day of fun for a number of Carbon County senior citizens during the annual senior picnic.
During the event, which was held at the Orioles Community Center in Lehighton, more than 160 men and women from the five county senior centers were treated to games, prizes, dancing and a day out with friends and food.Anne Horrigan of the Carbon County Area Agency on Aging and the coordinator of the Carbon County Senior Games explained that the picnic was hosted through the senior centers and Area Agency on Aging and was open to the public.“This is a day where we like to join all the senior centers just to celebrate, have a nice day out and we thought what better time than in the fall when the weather is still great,” she said. “They are enjoying visiting with each other. The last time some of the people have been together was in May during the senior games, so they are reconnecting and just celebrating life.”A special treat this year was a horse-drawn hayride, minus the hay, pulled by Jack and Jill and driven by their owner Scott Lignore, owner of Lignore Carriage Rides of Jim Thorpe.Diana Westermann and Ginny Rehrig, both of Lehighton, were thrilled by the rides.“This was amazing,” Westermann said, adding that this was her first hayride.“It was fun. I didn’t want to get off,” Rehrig added after petting Jack and Jill and thanking them for the ride.Rehrig said that she had been on hayrides in the past, but never one pulled by horses. She was also especially happy that there was no hay because she was allergic.Inside the hall, seniors filled the room with the sounds of laughter and good times as they gathered with friends from other centers to participate in a basket raffle, play Scrabble or cards, dance and just catch up with their friends.
