Carbon accepts bids for office building

Bids for Carbon County’s Susquehanna Street project, a three-story office building and parking garage in downtown Jim Thorpe, will be received until 3:30 p.m. Jan. 21.

The bids are for precast concrete, general construction, rock removal, elevator construction, fire protection, plumbing construction, mechanical construction, and electrical construction.

The bids will be publicly opened and read aloud at the regular commissioners meeting at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 24.

Commissioners on Dec. 13 rejected a $4.9 million bid from Slaw Precast of Lehighton, for precast concrete forms for the foundation of the project.

The project, which would provide much-needed additional office space, involves a three-story, 66,279-square-foot building and 110-space parking garage next to the 76 Susquehanna St. offices.

To build the structure, the county would have to demolish its former archive building at 44 Susquehanna and remove 20,000 yards of rock.

The county has been working on expanding office space since 2016 when commissioners refinanced bonds to free up $7.7 million for capital projects.

They include construction of a maintenance building at the upper end of the county parking lot and moving the archives to the east side of Jim Thorpe.

Chris Lukasevich of Jim Thorpe asked if U.S.-made steel is required to be used in the Susquehanna Street project. Commissioners said it was.
