Walnutport continues to discuss how to best utilize funding for its veterans memorial as the grant deadline approaches.
Borough council recently discussed the status of the grant that was obtained for the small park between Washington and Fifth streets.
Councilwoman Patrice Hunsicker said that Michael Kukitz, executive director of the Northern Lehigh Recreation Authority, previously obtained a grant for the veterans memorial.
However, it was noted that it is a matching grant, and that the borough would have to provide the other 50 percent.
Hunsicker said she didn’t want to see the money have to be returned.
Borough grant coordinator Michael Wentz agreed.
“I don’t ever want to see money go back,” Wentz said.
Resident Ricky Smith said he believes the work is necessary.
“Something should be done to that park,” Smith said.
Kukitz said the grant amount is $23,983, and was funded by a grant through the Northampton County Livable Landscapes Program, Northampton County’s Open Space Initiative.
He said the match may be cash, in-kind services or a combination of both.
Kukitz said the grant is to be used for beautification and accessibility improvements.
He said the work could possibly include the removal of trees and putting in new decorative trees, lighting and improved access to the memorial.
