Zachary Anthony always wanted to be a career firefighter and he got his wish shortly after graduating from Florida State Fire College in 2008. The Kunkletown native and Pleasant Valley graduate lost his life in a building collapse last week while serving as a York City firefighter.

Anthony and fellow firefighter, Ivan Kenneth Flanscha were killed when the wall collapsed in the old Weaver Organ and Piano building while the fire crew was extinguishing hot spots following the March 22 fire.

Two other York firefighters, Assistant Chief Greg Altland and firefighter, Erik Swanson were also seriously injured.

Anthony and Flanscha will be honored in a combined memorial service at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Memorial Hall at the York Fairgrounds.

Gov. Tom Wolf and U.S. Sen. Bob Casey, D-Pa., are scheduled to speak at the memorial Wednesday.

A funeral service for Anthony will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday at Freedom Valley Church, 3185 York Road, Gettysburg. Viewings will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

A local memorial service for Anthony will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at New Covenant World Outreach at 133 Switzgable Road, Brodheadsville. The burial will be private.

A GoFundMe campaign has been created to assist the families for the fallen and injured firefighter’s families.

The page was established by the York Professional Fire Fighters, IAFF Local 627 and the City of York Fire Department to accept donations for all of the families involved.

As of this morning the page had raised a little over $64,000 in three days. The page has set a goal of $100,000.
