Nesquehoning Borough council
Nesquehoning Borough Council spoke about or acted on the following items during its monthly meeting on Wednesday:
• Received a quote for cameras, associated equipment and installation for the borough’s five police vehicles. The quote came in at $36,700. Mayor Sam Kitchko said that maybe the borough should think about applying for a Local Share Accounts grant for items the department needs.
• Enacted the part-time police pay scale. New hires will be paid $12 per hour and jump to $18 per hour once they receive their MOPETC and finish ride-along training; six months after that will be an increase to $19; one-year anniversary, $20; and second anniversary, $22. Councilwoman Rosemary Porembo said the new pay scale will hopefully be an incentive for part-time officers to stay in the department, as well as attract more officers who would like part-time hours.
• Resident Harry Miller thanked council for getting the speed lines painted on Route 54. Last month, the issue of speed coming off what many locals refer to as the Hautobon, a 1-mile straightaway coming into the village of Hauto, that is known as an area for speeders.
• Approved waiving the tax certification fee when information is requested by Carbon County for applications in the home rehabilitation program.
• Approved the repository sale of a vacant lot at 215 W. Columbus Ave. at a cost of $871.
• Approved the bill payment due date amendment to the sewer and sanitation ordinances. Bill payments for these two services will be due without penalty by the last day of the calendar month, effective July 1.
• Adopted the 2015 edition of the property maintenance code. The 2015 edition is the most recent edition available.
• Approved a request to use the New Columbus Park at East Columbus and North Angelini avenues from 3-5 p.m. on April 19 for an Easter egg hunt by Powerhouse Restoration and Deliverance Ministries pending verification of the group’s liability insurance. Council had questions regarding the insurance as submitted.
• Accepted the 2019 volunteer service list of the borough’s first responders from the three borough fire chiefs. The list will be used for the emergency responder tax credit.
• Approved the American Red Cross’ renewal agreement to use the Nesquehoning Recreation Center as an emergency shelter in the event of an emergency.
• Announced that the April 10 workshop meeting will now be a special meeting to include voting on agenda items.
