The Department of Housing and Urban Renewal Development has approved a $201,975 grant to enable the Carbon County Recreation Authority to purchase 1,000 acres of land in the Jim Thorpe-Summit Hill renewal area.

The grant will cover about 50 percent of the cost for the watershed project, which has been set at $353,750, in addition to $25,000 for relocation payments.

The area is to be developed into a regional park that will feature an amphitheater and picnic and overnight camping accommodations.

The grant was announced by U.S. Rep. Daniel Flood, who represents Carbon County in the U.S. Congress.
