Carbon County court - drug cases

A Carbon County woman was sentenced to a county jail term late last week after admitting her part in a drug sale.

She was one of six defendants in pending drug-related cases to enter a guilty plea before Judge Joseph J. Matika, including a Lycoming County resident pleading in a traffic stop case in which a large quantity of heroin was found.Lansford saleMaria Gelsomina Alfeo, 27, of Lansford, pleaded to one count of criminal use of a communication facility for an incident on May 27, 2016, in the area of200 W. Abbott St., filed by borough police. A sale of heroin was set up by police using a confidential informant. A vehicle stop was made after the sale and 36 baggies of heroin were found in the vehicle.Charges of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia were dropped in a plea bargain.Alfeo told Matika, "Sorry for my wrong. I made bad choices on my part."Matika sentenced her to serve nine to one day less 24 months in the county prison and ordered her to get a drug and alcohol evaluation, zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use, supply a DNA sample, render 50 hours of community service, pay court costs of about $1,000 and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole.She was given credit for 267 days already spent in prison on the charge and paroled.Vehicle stopA large quantity of heroin was found during a traffic stop along Interstate 80 in Kidder Township.State police at Fern Ridge stopped a vehicle on Aug. 3, 2016, in the westbound lanes. The driver of the vehicle was identified asShahad Lee Harris, 25, of Williamsport.Troopers noted suspicious activity and conducted a search. Troopers found 1,250 packets of heroin equal to about 25 bricks of the drug. Harris took responsibility for the drugs, troopers said. There were other occupants in the vehicle.Harris pleaded to one count of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance. In exchange for the plea, the district attorney's office dropped other drug counts and four summary offenses.Sentencing was deferred and Matika ordered the adult probation office to prepare a presentence investigation report. Harris also indicated he would apply for placement in the county's Intermediate Punishment Program - house arrest.Drugs in jailHolly Marie Getz, 37, of Palmerton, pleaded to one count of possession of a controlled substance - contraband by a prisoner.She was charged by Nesquehoning police for an incident on June 3, 2016, when she was found with heroin on her at the county prison.She is facing a prison term at the time of sentencing, Matika noted.Sentencing was deferred as Matika ordered the adult probation office to prepare a presentence investigation report.Other pleasJose Enrique Cabrera, 22, of Bronx, New York, pleaded to one count of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance - heroin.He was stopped along I-80 westbound by state police at Fern Ridge. Found in the vehicle were about 10 grams of heroin along with various drug paraphernalia.Sentencing was deferred and Matika ordered the adult probation office to prepare a PSI.Phillip W. Argott, 41, of Lansford, pleaded to one count of possession of a controlled substance - heroin.He was arrested on Nov. 2, 2016, by Lansford police in the area of 14 W. Patterson St. During the investigation, police found 40 packets of heroin. In exchange for the plea, charges of possession with intent to deliver, criminal conspiracy - possession with intent to deliver and possession of drug paraphernalia were dropped.Matika placed him on probation for a year and ordered he get a drug and alcohol evaluation, render 50 hours of community service, pay court costs of about $1,000 and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation.Timothy Hugh O'Brien, 28, of Coaldale, pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia.He was arrested on May 10, 2016, by Summit Hill police at the School House Apartments parking lot, located along West Hazard Street. He was found in a vehicle with various drug items. He is currently in the county prison on a probation violation awaiting sentencing.He went to the Salvation Army inpatient program, but was discharged unsuccessfully and has applied for re-entry to the program.Matika placed him on probation for six months and ordered he render 25 hours of community service, get a drug and alcohol evaluation, zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use, pay court costs of about $1,000 and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation.
