Colts stay perfect; Greene stars on track
The bitter cold and rain limited scholastic action this weekend, but a few events were held.
The Marian baseball team remained perfect with another shutout win while several track teams saw individuals achieve success in relays.BASEBALLWestern Wayne-MarianMarian used two prolific innings to back a solid pitching performance by Nick Kubishin as it posted a 9-0 non-league victory over Western Wayne.Kubishin pitched five innings of one-hit ball, recording seven strikeouts. Joe Nahas came on relief, tossing a pair of hitless innings while striking out five to preserve the shutout victory.KJ Snerr led the Colts' offensively with two singles, two runs scored, two RBIs and two stolen bases. Also part of that relay team for the Colts were Tim Busher, Sean Mick and Zaccary Roberts.Jim Thorpe,No. Lehigh, Tamaqua at Zephyr RelaysJim Thorpe's Rayan Greene had an outstanding afternoon at the Zephyr Relays at Whitehall High School as the Olympian senior took two individual firsts while also teaming up for a second and a fourth in a pair of relays.Tamaqua's Allison Pedersen (discus) and teammate Morgan Boyle (javelin) also managed firsts on the day.Jim Thorpe, Northern Lehigh and Tamaqua all participated in the event that featured 12 girls teams and 13 boys teams. North Penn managed to take the girls team title and Stroudsburg nabbed the boys team championship.Greene bested the field in the long jump (20-0), and triple jump (44-6.50) for his individual golds. He teamed up with Antonio Madera, Randy Sanon and Shawn O'Toole for second place in the 800 sprint medley relay. His fourth place came in the 800 relay where he teammed with Jarrin Geisinger, O'Toole and Sanon.In addition to Greene's big day, the Olympians' Autumn Cope nabbed silver in the girls javelin (127-4); Michael Jefferson took third in the boys shot put (45-3); Brooke Cope was fourth in the shot put (31-6.5); the Olympian boys distance medley relay team of Jian Gentile, Hunter Simmons, Prince Simmonds, and Dylan Bucior (11:39.1) and Kevin Vitti in the shot put (43-0.50) both had fifth-place finishes; while Cope in javelin (102-5), the 400 shuttle hurdle relay team of Jillian Peterson, Lily Pfeifer, Camille Principe and Mackenzie Rosenberger (1:21.1), and 800 relay team Emma Dunbar, Monae Bullock, Noelle Fasolino and Marnea Wise (1:57.9) all finished sixth.The Tamaqua girls had a fine day in the throwing events as Pedersen's discus toss of 102-4 proved to be enough for first while Boyle chucked the javelin 142-0 for the gold. Boyle also took second place in the pole vault (9-6).Fourth-place finishers for Tamaqua were Kayla Holland in the girls discus (96-10), Matt Smarr in the boys pole vault (11-6) and Jake Martinez in the boys javelin (141-2). Grabbing fifth-place finishes were the Lady Raiders' 1600 relay team (Chelsea Frantz, Victoria LaBar, Janette Kabanal and Monika Shimko) ran a 4:25.9 and Allison Pedersen in the triple jump (31-0). Tamaqua's 3200 relay team of Brad Clemson, Nate Davidson, Joe Nortavage, and Adam Melnick (9:07.6) placed sixth,For Northern Lehigh, Conrad Bevans took bronze in the discus with a toss of 127-11. Placing fourth for the Bulldogs were Jill Olewine in the girls triple jump (32-7); Everette Bevans in the triple jump (39-11.50); the boys' sprint medley relay team of TJ Dooley, Seth Keiser, Hassan Mujovic and Robert Shoff (1:42.2); and the 440 shuttle hurdle relay team of Ryan Fine, Mujovic, Dan Patterson and Andrew Sufranko (1:16.7). Finishing sixth were Olewine in the long jump (15-9.75), and the Bulldogs' distance medley relay team of Brandon Belfonti, Gage Christ, Dooley, and Gavin Kemery (11:39.5).
