Carbon County Fair set for Monday opening

Preparations for this year’s Carbon County Fair are in full swing with opening ceremony scheduled for 5 p.m. Monday on the fair’s main stage.

The fair will continue through Aug. 11 at the fairgrounds at 3285 Little Gap Road, Palmerton. Hours are from 4 to 10 p.m. on weekdays and from 2 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, with general admission for $5 for everyone 6 years and older. The 2018 lineup is made up of a variety of activities are planned throughout fair week that following the theme of “Farms, Families, Fairs and Fun,” including live performances, vendors and amusement rides.

“We’re excited for fair season to start,” said President Robert Silliman.

Despite the dreary weather, set up for the Carbon County Fair was still going according to schedule.

“We build a little city in two days,” he said.

According to Silliman, “crazy is our normal” when it comes to making sure that everything is set up and ready to go come fair week.

Other fair preparations include bringing in food stands, amusement rides and plenty of tents in case of rain.

“We’re hoping for beautiful weather,” said Joe Herzog, vice president and head of security. This year’s planning involved the addition of even more tents so that fairgoers can continue to enjoy the fair no matter what mother nature has in store.

Monday

• Opening session and Fair Queen Crowning at 5 p.m. on the main stage.

• DJ Chicken Nugget with line dancing and Southern Reign Reunion at 7 p.m. on the main stage.

• Zero Turn Competition at 7 p.m. (free with fair admission) in the small arena.

• Fireworks at 9:30 p.m. in the arena.

Tuesday

• Children’s Day activities include 6-hour ride special for $15 a rider from 4 to 10 p.m., with special drawing for prizes in the Kids Zone, including six bicycles and electronics at 7 p.m., all-day pony rides, Farmer for a Day from 5 to 8 p.m., all day Knocker Ball and Smokey Bear at intermittent times.

• Garden Tractor Pull at 6 p.m. in the Small Arena.

• Performance by Rick K. & The Allnighters at 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on the main stage.

Wednesday

• Georgette Jones with the Cramer Brothers on the main stage at 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.

• Garden Tractor Pull at 6 p.m. in the Small Arena.

• The arena will host a demo derby, garden tractor demo, junk car race and youth derby ages 12-15 at 7 p.m. Admission to the arena is $6 for everyone 6 years and older.

• Senior Citizens Day special drawing at 8 p.m. on the main stage. Must be present to win.

Thursday

• Martin Family Circus on the main stage at both 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.

• Barnyard Olympics at 5:30 p.m.

• Demolition Derby including kids power cars, full size cars and compact cars at 7 p.m. in the arena

Friday

• Brian Dean Moore Band at 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on the main stage.

• Tough Truck event at 7 p.m. in the arena.

Saturday

• Antique Field Stock Tractor Pull at 4 p.m. in the small arena.

• The Cramer Brothers Band on the main stage at 5, 7 and 9 p.m.

• Remote Control Demo Derby at 7 p.m. in the arena.
